Germany is the team to watch this year. They've looked the best of any I've seen.

I also think the US get out of the group. They beat Ghana and played the worst I've seen them play in years. Portugal looks vulnerable. Should be a good match. Very curious how Klinsi adapts to jozy being out 433? Green? Zusi? Or does johannsen get the nod?

Johanssen has done little to impress me in his time the past few appearances (pretty much the only times I've really watched him). Seems to lack all chemistry and is very much a straight forward player, not capable of playing Jozy's role. Nobody is.

This offense lacks dramatically without Altidore. They might piece some things together with tactical adjustments but it's irrelevant. If we beat Portugal because they're mentally weak and faded without their star, we'll advance from the mighty group of death... and still might be the weakest team left.

They had a chance to progress and gell / get hot and surprise to advance a bit past the group. Advancing is hollow now, imo. No real test of who they are / want to be. They gambled on roster building by assuming Jozy will play. Now the team is artificially weakened. I had hoped to get a window into the future. Not anymore.

I'm not really sure about Johanssen.  He's not target player but scores very well in the Dutch league.  The US doesn't have another player like Jozy in the pool, much less the squad but I think a little too much is being made of needing a target forward.  Jesse Marsch was on a podcast over at the MLSsoccer site before the world cup started and talked about Jozy. He's really not that good of a target forward, despite the protypical body for it.   He said when the realized that and started playing to space and to his feet more, Jozy thrived. Its why he did so well in the Dutch league but poorly for Sunderland.

AJ matches that description. I don't think the US brought a true target foward into this squad.  IF they need to relieve pressure then they need to play it into space more.  Johanssen has ability to combine and play with high skill.   I don't know who good of a 1 v 1 player he is and that's something that Jozy really brings. The only other player we have with that skill (theoretically) off the bench is Green.  so we could see Green.

The us tactics have been interesting as they ahve been a type of combo set up between a tilted 433 with Bedoya playing the wing and a diamond midfield.   If they do that- then Green might be able to start as a high winger and bring that speed, explosion and 1 v 1 ability that was drawing penalties in earlier friendlies.

I really haven't seen enough of Green or Johannsen to know what they can bring but both were brought in for a reason just like Brooks. Hopefully they demonstrate why they are here on Sunday.

I expect US to attempt to play a lot more possession and then if we can get ahead- counter.  So that likely calls for Johanssen and later sub.   If they go very defensive they could bring on davis and zusi as wingers and play a 4231 or mix and play teh christmas tree

My bet is they stay with that tilted 433/ diamond and start AJ.    Then play to wings and avoid the CBS and play to space more.    I don't think things are that dire without Jozy but really wish was healthy...  We'll see.

I am very curious about their tactics on Sunday... should be interesting.
