Face
Only a few are saying differently. MikeH, who wrote about a thousand threads on QBs, 9$ who came out of nowhere, and Stranger, who I think was joking. No worries Face. Mike LOL, I started to actually love his QB threads. I found myself hoping we took a QB moreso for Mike than the rest of the fanbase, I didn't want to see all his hardwork be in vain.

Stranger
well his last name does end with berger I wonder why he chose 7 instead of 8. Maybe he wants to subconsciously trick Whiz into thinking he is Roethlisberger.
N/A
We need to take a step back here guys. More like 2 or 3. This went from a kid we were rightfully excited about, a steal in the 6th round who we thought might have a good chance to show what he has at the end of the year if Jake doesn't play well to the no doubt about it opening day starter? How did this escalate so quickly from just yesterday, because he threw a good pass in what was basically a pick up game? Look, I'm big time on the Mett train, no doubt, but lets just take a breather & watch some training camp & preseason games here first guys. A large part is optimism (seriously does anyone get excited about Locker doing something this year - what would a good Locker ceiling be - average NFL QB?) But I think the main reason, or for me at least, is watching Mettenberger. He throws pass after pass with consistency. He stands tall in the pocket and delivers passes right before impact when defenders break through his line. He seems to always deliver his passes with good balance and footwork. He throws to receivers in consistent places so receivers can practice and have basic muscle memory where to catch his passes. He throws to usually clean spots for the receiver but where defenders can't get it. He played in a pro-style offense that he not only picked well in one year but he also overcame many of his prior weaknesses (long delivery, need to much space to set and pass, locked onto one receiver - he overcame all that. improving each to where they became positives especially working with limited space in the pocket.) The only current negatives (at lot of current profiles still show his 2012 weaknesses which he corrected in likely cut-and-paste jobs) are spreading the ball more, and short passes, but I suspect those are not going to be hard to over-come for him, but standing tall in the pocket to still deliver perfect passes when the pocket is collapsing, and just base accuracy are stuff you can improve but not teach well to QB prospects that do not have them. chef
I obviously baited you in jest. Just play along. No need to take it seriously in this thread. Can't believe I came here looking for info on rook camp and ended up reading through all this crap. Cyrus, you're not just a baiter, you're apparently a master at it. scine09
Actually in that picture he looks just like Collins, not Roethlisberger.
cenj
I don't buy that there would anywhere near this much buzz around a 6th round running QB with questionable mechanics/accuracy/etc. People didn't lose their minds when we signed Wilson this offseason either. Murray is probably the other guy the would have generated a lot of buzz -- and anyone drafted between rounds 1-3, because it would have been a clearer message Locker was done here. Earlier this offseason, Murray and Mett were the two prospects many posters were arguing we should take in the mid-rounds.

chef
And Mettenberger - who somehow just became the QB of Vandy instead of LSU, goes back to pass against the perennial defensive powerhouse that is Alabama (Birmingham) and throws the ball to any receiver not named Jordan Matthews, annndddd... over throws him. Or of course he might be able to throw it to a top 15 pick in Beckham, or as he actually did here, to Landry, a lowly 2nd rounder with some of the best hands and lowest drop rates in college football last year. Just giving you a hard time. But yeah, context is important.

scine09
it shows that you're not the one I'm arguing w/. I don't really disagree w/ you on most points here. If it was Murray or AJ, you obviously wouldn't be as involved in the discussion as I said even though I didn't mention you by name. but the primary ones I'm arguing against would still be here. Because we all realize that it's not about Mettenberger but about Locker and having a young QB on the roster that was drafted and has upside. You're one of the very few on this board that doesn't get it.

Also, while I totally understand the argument regarding Beckham and Landry being pro caliber receivers, my mind always go to this next: "Well who does everyone think he's going to be throwing to in the NFL?" But yes, Beckham and Landry (to an extent) were significantly better than the defenders they faced. Although I have to say after watching so many games that Beckham let go of a lot of contested balls in the redzone that he had two hands on. Landry's lack of speed definitely showed at times too and he had a number of concentration drops too that were total gimmes.

Landry's drop rate was about 2.5%, so what ever that "number" was, it was small, like 2. And I'll be honest though some here might not believe it: Beckham and Landry might be a better combo than Wright and Hunter, especially as Hunter is still way more potential than production (tough to judge his past couple years post-injury and NFL transition). And you could make the argument that knowing how good Landry's hands were, that was the best and safest place to put the ball.
