Jamalisms Posted November 6, 2013 Report Share Posted November 6, 2013 Beginining 1:06:01 Jamal: I wanted to ask this question before the season starts, and Scotty I’ll be interested in your take... and just honest, random guess at this point: Do you think that the change in scheme, the focus on the run game and the offensive line will be enough to make Chris Johnson look good again? Whether or not that’ll save his job for next year, that’s a totally different discussion... but just will he look good? Will they have figured out how to make him look good? Scotty: No Jon: *laugh* Scotty: I can honestly tell you why, I mean I really do believe that and here’s why: The problems that Chris Johnson had were problems even when the plays were blocked well and there was plenty of times where... you know, who’s the guy on NFL Network who everyone loves... Jon and Jamal: Mayock Scotty: Mayock and other that did the games, they showed plays that were blocked well and he won’t hit the holes. I mean he wants to hit the big play and stuff so much I think he’s still gonna take a lot of tackles for losses. That doesn’t mean the OL won’t help the running game overall but as far as him being what he was... I don’t think teams are ever gonna let him do that again because they now know how he did it back in 2009 and they’re not gonna let him hit those edges and stuff. They’re not gonna let him do that. So I don’t think we’re seeing 2009 Chris Johnson again. Jamal: No, not 2009 but do you think he would look like a top 5 back in the NFL? Scotty: No I don’t think he’ll be a top 5 back. Jamal: Ok. Scotty: I think they brought Shonn Greene in because he does fit what they wanna do. I don’t think he’s all that great a RB but he fits what they’re gonna do. Jamal: Style wise, yeah running style wise he is what they’re looking for and Chris Johnson certainly isn’t but Chris Johnson has the flash and Greene... I think he’s the absence of flash. Scotty: I saw this the other day and there are so many CJ threads, which I mostly start btw, that I didn’t even say anything about this. I saw on one of the sites a breakdown of the Jets game... ok he had the 94 yard run, right... do you know he ran for one first down that game and that was it. Jamal: That wouldn’t have been a first down. Scotty: Well he ran for what would have been a first down because he went past the first down marker. That was the only time and that’s like his whole season right there. There’s so many bad runs in there. He also gave up two sacks in that game btw. He had 120-something yards and all of it was because he made one big play. Great he made a big play, but those aren’t gonna happen very often. It just the same argument we’ve made a million times. It all goes back to the same stuff. He’s not consistent and he’s not gonna be consistent. Jamal: Very good... and the reason I’m saying “good, thank you’ is because I don’t wanna argue about it. I think we’ve got plenty of time to do that and it will be fun when we do. Just a basic take: I will say that I expect him to... because there is more in front of him and I think that... they’ve said at least, and I tend to buy it... that he’s got a bit of pip in his step and I think the fact that they’re telling him “we’re gonna focus on the run game,” that’ll solve some of the mental issues and I think he’ll be a better back for it. I think he’ll look really good this next year. Jon: I think that’s the key... what you just said. I don’t disagree with anything that Scotty said, but I think a large part of it is because his confidence got totally shot when he saw what the offensive line did most of the time. Then those few times the plays were there, he wasn’t used to taking that hole. Who knows, maybe he can’t come out of that. Maybe that’s who he is now and he is locked into that but I would like to hope that with this offensive line... because there are gonna be holes, I think we can almost assure ourselves of that... there is gonna be better blocking this time. Will he get 2,000 yards again?... Jamal: No. It’s almost mathematically impossible. Scotty: There’s a better chance he won’t get 1,000 than he’ll get 2,000. Jamal: You’d probably have to go with that on odds. I think it’s low odds for both but I think there’s only so many carries and, personally, I think they have plans to get Greene carries where they never had plans to get anyone else carries. It was always “if Chris Johnson doesn’t do well then we’ll look at it.” Scotty: If they had Shonn Greene on the team the last two years he wouldn’t have gotten 1,000 yards either season. Jamal: There’s a strong potential for that. I won’t disagree. Scotty: He got 1,047 in 2011. I mean, 47 yards from Greene and he didn’t get it. Jamal: 2011 there’s no chance it would have happened, yeah. 2012 he might have but... I don’t know... I think that the only reason that Chris Johnson will look better is because the blocking is better and because he’s going to be... Jon: His swagger, his confidence will be back. Jamal: Yeah, swagger... it’ll just... he’s feeling confident again. And not that I think he lacked confidence, but confident in... part of the reason I think he – and there are a lot of people that disagree with me, I know Scotty will – but I think part of his problems in the last couple years is trusting the hole to be there. Jon: Yeah, that’s what I was trying to say. Scotty: And what I think the problem was, is early on in his career teams didn’t really know how to gameplan against him. I remember... remember the poster Jas? ... he did a Youtube clip of CJ in 2009 and 2010 and... man... he would go inside and cut on a dime and break outside. And teams played a lot of 8 man front back then too. He’s so fast that he could get the edge and even when the defense had the angle on him, he’d beat the angle. And now? Nuh-uh. Teams aren’t going to do that. You come to us. We’ll be waiting for you. And he doesn’t like that. He likes them coming at him and using his speed and they’re never gonna let him do that again regardless of the blocking. Jamal: Good enough. Thank you for entertaining me on the question. I wondered what people were thinking because it’s one thing to discuss will he be here next year, is he worth it... those sorts of things but just the idea of we’re investing a lot into it, will that be enough to make him look good? It’s something that I don’t think has been discussed on Titans Report , so I just wondered what people were thinking. Scotty: I think that also explains “What’s wrong with CJ, is he washed up, did he lose his speed?” No. I mean, to some degree it would happen to anybody to some degree. He’s not as fast as he was when he was a rookie. He’s still one of the fastest RB of all-time. Teams play him different and now he hesitates because either he doesn’t want to do what they want him to do or because he’s trying to figure out what to do... and, in the NFL, if you hesitate one split second the defenses are fast and they’re on you. Unless he starts hitting the hole inside and getting 4 and 5 yards... maybe if he changed his entire style, which I don’t think he could do, maybe he could turn it back around. I don’t know. Jon: It is fascinating to think about it like that because we’ve seen that so often in the NFL. I guess you could call it one year wonders, one hit wonders, whatever... where a scheme or a style or a gimmick works for a year and then NFL defensive coordinators, NFL coaches they adjust.
