Long time reader, never posted before. I am a long time directv subscriber, however cancelled my service 2 yrs ago and put it in my wifes name to get free HD for life. Therefore my contract expired the first of August

Called directv and asked for customer retention at prompt. 1st agent no luck. Called back the next day hit the jackpot, asked for customer retention and the agent was from TN, here is what i got.

Free Sunday ticket

Free redzone

$20 off for 12 months

$5 off HBO for 6 months

I had to agree to 12 month contract to do so.

Then viacom had their dispute called back and got

$5 off for 3 months

Starz/showtime free 3 months

Sorry for being long winded. Check out the forum on footballguys.com lots of post about sunday ticket on there.

Welcome to the board! Thanks for sharing.

I'm in the same boat as @TitansWycheck89. Waiting to see what they offer for PS3 this year.

Hello. I'd like to cancel please. blah blah, I understand you and Viacom are having a dispute, but now my kids are pissed at me. No Mtv, Nikelodeon etc. Comcast has all that stuff. What can you do? $5 off per month for a year? No. That's not enough. Can I speak to someone else. Different person. Same story. $20 off per month for a year, plus free Starrz & Showtime for a year. That's tempting, but I think I still want to cancel. Next person, same story. Add free Sunday Ticket in HD (it was SD last year), waived HD fee, waived additional tv fee, $30 off for 6 months, free hardware allowing me to watch anything I've dvr'ed in my house on any tv in my house. I think I can put up with my kids bitching. Thanks much.

They're almost paying me to watch tv right now. My last bill was under $40. I don't think my kids even knew Mtv and Nik were off the air.

I got my sunday ticket free again this year by calling and complaining during the viacom blackout last month. Call em up, politely say you got a great deal from your local cable provider and want to cancel, then ask for free stuff to stick around. It usually takes more than one call to get to someone who has the authority. You want the cancellation department (though I've heard it called something else which I forget).

Just keep calling back threatening to cancel until they give you the ticket for free. It's never taken me more than three tries.

"You're giving the sunday ticket for free to new customers. I've been a customer for over 10 years and I feel like you care more about new customers than me." I use that one every year.

Just curious as to how this promoted deal looks to all you current subscribers, as I finally bought a house out here and now have the option to stick DirectTV in if I wish (haven't even had a TV in years, just used PC).

$34.99/month

150 channels (of what I don't know) incl. HD

HD DVR + 3 HD receivers (which don't need at this point, maybe one someday)

Free Sunday Ticket (does not mention Redzone)

3 months Free HBO, etc (whatever)

Next up deal is $39.99

205+ channels

Is Viacom back on with them or no? Definitely not mentioned in promotion.

These are 2 years deals, BTW

I'm pretty hesitant to put any TV feed in here at all. Watching mainly some sports, a few movies via Netflix, and already have access online to Comcast including HBO via place in Seattle (Comcast is not in Hawaii) so there's not much I can't watch anyway. But I did break down and buy a pretty big and semi-tech-laden TV (movies look amazing), and the place was already set with some nice in-ceiling speakers all around as the previous owner was an A/V guy. Kinda thinking it'd be fun to catch some Titans games on the big screen when I'm not working at gametime 7am Sunday morning, but don't have much perspective on dealing with Direct TV outside of their Sunday Ticket To-go online service.

Thoughts?

I haven't had cable or satelite TV for 10 years now. LOL. I really only watch the TV when it's football season and the Titans games....I'm either there, or watching it with my Dad at his place or listening to it on the radio.

I'm waiting 'til closer to the season. I have had a nightmare with DirecTv this year, and I'm positive I will be cashing in soon. They have already charged me $90 for Sunday Ticket, despite having already phoned in and "cancelled" the renew.

@chef My wife and I just bought a house as well and we went with the $34.99 package (we don't watch much television) so that I could get the free Sunday Ticket. So far it's been great and I have no complaints. Even though we don't watch TV that often, having something in the background (like CNN or Sports) is important when I'm cooking and get tired of listening to music all day long.

Last year I streamed the Sunday Ticket over the PS3 with too many interruptions that made the process frustrating.

Calling back is probably good idea with any company. I did this on a Dell monitor recently - asked Dell to match Amazon price. The Amazon price was from 3rd party merchant so ify warranty and Dell will not honor the zero pixel defect on premium screens that it offers whe nbuying from it if you buy from other retailers.

Dell representatives told me no a few times in chat, stating that Dell does match that merchant (I guess they saw it was 3rd party) adn one gave me a link of all merchants that Dell will match in price. Finally on about the 5th try, late at night, one agreed.

Thanks. I'm having fun with my new favorite toy - Squeezebox. So not too bored with music yet.

Drop a line if you become aware of any interesting details/problems with that plan.

I think the way Direct TV has handled the NFL Sunday Ticket is borderline illegal. I paid full price since they started offering this package. Living in St. Louis all I got was KC or STL. Now I have moved back to West Virginia and it's Steeler country, leaving me little choice if I want to watch the Titans.

When the lockout happened it was revealed that the broadcast writes were paid up front by the broadcasters, creating the owners war chest. Direct TV overcharged for the package and then took their loyal customers money and gave it to "New subscribers."

It wouldn't surprise me if I get notified about a class action law suit against Direct TV.

What are you talking about? Most businesses follow a similar model. They already have your money as a paying customer. They attract new customers by offering services for free or at minimal costs in the hopes they they will pay for them down the road after the trial period ends.

Been in America long? Anyone can get sued by anyone. I opened the statement by saying it was borderline illegal. Not illegal. I get notices all the time to be involved in class action lawsuits, someone will try it, hide and watch.
