Titans Training Camp and Preseason Discussion

Recommended Posts

Every year I point out players who are struggling in preseason. Every year you guys all get on your intellectual high horse and explain how much none of it matter. Then every year we watch those same players struggle during the season in the EXACT same ways that showed up in the preseason and you guys act like no one could see it coming. Every. Year. Y'all got it though.

You got the receipts for any of the last part?

I despise pre-season. I only use it as a means to get a look at late round guys I might need later in the fantasy draft or on waivers.

Even when they ran right at him it was not evident. I also never said he was Simmons. I said Simmons' power was evident from the beginning and Sweat's wasn't. I don't know why you guys are having such a hard time with something that should be self evident. He looked nothing like the guy we saw in college and that people have seen at practice. I

you may be right but I'd still wait till these Seattle practices and games to begin any real worry/ critique. He said he was real nervous and pumped for the first game. New d players. New scheme. Playing by himself. Yada. Yada

from what the guys on the radio say, it's that he gets off balance easily and he is still very weak for his size.

Not sure if those are translating to play or not.

In terms of actual regular season play at RG, he's looked ok, especially in pass protection.  Maybe the coaches tape shows something different.  I mean you want to argue he's not a real good OT, I would have no arguments but at G he's looked servicable based on the games he's played in.

I went back to see what some posters were saying about past year PSG1, and saw some of the same people in this thread arguing that Radunz showed enough to potentially be our starting LT, and Weaver dominating enough to be the future at DE.

These games mean nothing. Don't argue a middle ground fallacy -- history shows that these games are far closer to meaningless than partially meaningful. If Sweat had dominated with 6 sacks on 6 straight plays, he would still be just as likely to bust. Wait for joint practices if you want better evaluation.

Looking bad in the preseason is more meaningful than looking good is. The preseason is set up for good players to stand out or at least look OK. When they look bad, it's not unreasonable to say it.

Even if Sweat doesn't standout in the joint practices it isn't any definitive statement about his career, it is just hilarious that some here are so stubborn they can't even admit he was underwhelming in this first live action against the 49ers.

Again. I'm talking about the preseason game in isolation. I'm saying nothing about Sweat going forward.

Not gonna lie, I'm taken aback by the level of defensiveness to such an obvious and limited observation.

Remember Chig's drops last preseason? What did he struggle with for a good part of last season? Remember Levis's erratic accuracy in the preseason? What did he struggle with last season?  It was immediately apparent that Gibby had no sideline to sideline ability. What does he struggle with? On the positive side, (positive preseason performances mean less ) How long did it take to notice that Spears was a stud with DYNAMIC change of direction ability? That's just last season and I'm sure I could go on. Again, I'm not even saying that preseason performance and regular season performance are 1:1. What I'm saying is that guys don't magically become different players once the regular season arrives and if you see them really struggling with something in the preseason, it won't magically go away week 1. Btw, none of this is even relative to Sweat who I already said, I am not judging solely based on PSG1. I hope you can see the nuance.

It's pretty obvious Sweat will struggle during the season with conditioning and technique - I don't know if anyone is really saying let's wait and see on that, it is pretty obviously going to be a factor.

The key will be can he counter those issues with good reps in live games, to make his play a net positive.

I'd say the biggest point being made is that he wasn't as bad as some wanted to make you believe... and it's the 1st preseason game. Give the kid a little time at least before rushing to judgement especially considering that he's a NT, not a penetrating disruptive DT.
