Starkiller
Also, in addition to the undecideds, Democrats need a huge turnout for the election. This is going to depress turnout if he’s still the nominee come November. It will cost them both the House and Senate if he’s the nominee just like you saw when they had low turnout in 2016 with Hillary. They need to get over it and stop doing the work for the Trump campaign. Should Biden be running at 81? of course not. Should they have done more to get Harris ready over the last 4 years? absolutely. Do I wish the candidate pool was better and they had a worthy challenger to Trump aside from Biden? yes but I'm being pragmatic. Its the age old problem with the democratic party. They play the political game with their hearts while the GOP plays for keeps. And the GOP is winning because they are playing a different game. I agree that it's reactionary, but I don't think it's nonsense. I think the debate did real damage to Biden and eroded support, turned off donors, and shifted some of the undecideds. I do think Newsome would be a better candidate at this point but I won't pretend to know if it's the right move or how realistic it would be to win in that scenario. It's bad news, regardless of how people will try to spin it. I think Newsome would win easily over Trump and that’s all I care about. And in the end, I think Biden will see that, too. Do you know anyone who has told you they are switching their vote because of last night? Even if this was a terrible debate performance and it was, history shows debates don't matter one way or the other. Of course if Biden loses, this will be considered the reason without supporting evidence. Its how things are done these days. Biden's bigger issue is if this is how he looks and sounds on the campaign trail over the next 3-4 months. Edited June 28, 2024 by oldschool

OzTitan
As bad as it was, the next debate (assuming there is one?) will have such a low bar for Biden, that even a marginally more coherent and energetic performance will restore a lot of confidence. It's really early still, and funnily enough the constant attacks on his mental state and age since 2019 may somewhat dull the impact, because it ends up not being a shock to most. It's only a shock to the Dems who were hoping he'd come out and run mental circles around Trump, which was always a pipe dream. These people aren't voting Trump of course anyway so it may not matter as much as some think. I think they can ride him out if he can make it that long, which is no sure thing because unlike before where he'd stumble and struggle and get frustrated, this time is genuinely looked like he had no idea where he was at times. It will help if they can somehow focus more on what they bring as a WH team and play up what Trump is bringing. oldschool

The bar was incredibly low last night and Biden failed. There’s every reason to think that it will happen again if he’s the nominee. This is how he's looked for months despite the overexaggeration on one side and the efforts to downplay on the other. It's who he is. He looks cognitively incapable, and a lot of people care about that; whether you want to believe that or not, it changes things. There was a ton of enthusiasm to stop Trump last time. That same enthusiasm has waned, and it will only get worse with Biden on the campaign trail. No1TitansFan

It was. and you are projecting the impact of the event based on emotion and your dislike of Biden due to the Afghanistan withdrawal despite the fact the guy has done more to honor vets than any recent President in memory. Maybe stop acting like you are an objective observer here. Put it on the table; who are you voting for? Because it sure as hell seems like you're leaning Trump even though you say he's unfit. I don't think that's the person that needs to be in the oval office. The only reason it's even a discussion is because Trump is so bad.
