Or put another way, how is a black athlete from a black fraternity using a sign from that fraternity a racist attack on white fans? like, what exactly are the white fans supposed to find offensive about that?

 

It sounds like the suggestion is McNair knew the fans who were racist would get upset, so he did it anyway. To which I say, good on him? ruffling the feathers of racists is funny.

That’s one of the games I’d kindve like to see because Yancey & Dyson were healthy along with McNair & it was one of the few real high volume & very efficient games McNair had. He threw in the high 300’s I remember, about 360-370. Granted the Bengal D was bad but still, McNair didn’t have many games like that. In ‘01 & ‘03 he had a bunch of hyper efficient games where he had a real high YPA on 20-30 throws but he didn’t have many big yardage games like this.

 

The ‘99 team was special in how tough & smart they were & the defense really rounded into form for the postseason, but I always felt that they should’ve really been more of a dominant team then a tough, gritty type team. Thigpen really was an explosive difference maker, he had a few huge seasons with Kordell Stewart as his QB, and he was averaging close to 20 yards a catch the first qtr or so of the season, but of course was injured. And so was Steve. Neither was a shell of themselves when they came back. Steve was actually injured in the Bengal game discussed above. Dyson also had some dings & he didn’t look like the same guy he did early in the year. I’ll always love the ‘99 Titans but also think what if.

 

Also, Steve was flat awesome in the ‘01 Tampa game. That was a great Tampa D & he just eviscerated them. That to me was the epitome of what Steve could be when on. I still remember that game, much of it. He navigated the pocket as good as a QB can, just quick subtle moves to buy time & just killed them with intermediate & deep passes. Justin McCareins was a rookie in his 1st start & Steve hit him with 2 bombs…..and he of course got hurt. But Steve was as good as it gets in that game. I wish he had more like it.

Even if the intention was to target racist people, how does he not realize only racist people would feel targeted by that? why on earth would someone who isn't racist lay blame on a black athlete for acting out (if you could even call it that, it's a celebration lol) after they felt like they were being targeted because of racism?

Racists actually think every white person thinks exactly like them but are just to scared to be public about it. He thinks everyone felt the same way as him because he doesn't realize that the way he feels is fucked up. In his mind trying to trigger racists= trying to trigger white people which he ironically considers the only true racism.

I remember that NE-NYJ game.  I believe NE won on the last play of the game.  And of course as you said Testaverde got injured.  I know their record was 8-8 but given the circumstances that was one of Parcells's best coaching jobs, getting eight wins out of the likes of Rick Mirer and Ray Lucas.

 

Anyways, I got to watch very little of the Titans in that era since I only saw what was shown nationally and got the Patriots every week.  I didn't get to see any of the games that NFL Network showed and it was amazing how much better they moved the ball when McNair threw than when they ran George.  Granted it was only four games and maybe it wasn't always like that but in those four games at least you could see they were a better team with McNair being in control rather than handing it off.  

 

I watched the three games from 2001 and I have absolutely no memory of Joe Walker, their kick returner.  He even started a game at safety.  I usually remember players like that but I don't ever remember hearing his name.  I'm guessing he never played or did much in the nationally televised games that year.

McNair always did the Omega sign after scoring.  In the same era, Zach Crockett did the same.

 

This idea it was some racist taunt from McNair to the fans is ridiculous. 

 

Now he was booed in the Bengals game but that was not the worst thing those fans did....it was cheering when he got knocked out against KC in 2000.....which had him contemplate retiring.

@scine09it was tough to figure McNair prior to ‘01. At times he was so boring to watch, he was extremely risk averse, there were games where you could literally count on one hand the passes he threw to an actual WR. He had games where he basically only threw to Wycheck & Eddie. It was so BORING. But at the same time he was very effective & played winning football. He didn’t turn it over, he was a great runner, and had great natural instincts in the pocket. He’d make back breaking plays where the defense did everything right but he found a way to get a 1st down. Plus he threw it great in 2 minute situations, even prior to ‘01.

 

I do think he was probably a bit too risk averse because of Jeff Fisher but in fairness it was much harder to throw back then. It’s so much easier now. And while he had his faults Fisher knew how to win games bsck then. He was a great game clock & time out coach, and McNair’s style of play was a big part of that.

 

It also sucks that Thigpen & Dyson never stayed healthy to pair with Mason. 
 

Lastly, while Steve deserves criticism for not keeping himself in shape, I have to say it also bugged me that he didn’t put much time into really studying the game. From everything I read he just wasn’t a student of the game & it’s a shame because he was SO instinctual. He really did have eyes on the side & back of his head, he just had such an innate feel for what was going on around him. And he threw a GREAT ball. Just lasers. I don’t think he ever threw a wobbler. He didn’t throw a good deep ball early but he really improved it from ‘01-‘03. But his intermediate balls were just threads.

Go watch the Bengals game from 1999.  It's on YouTube.  McNair was so good in that game, especially early.  They came out and threw, threw and threw some more.  And moved the ball at will.  They shot themselves in the foot a lot that day, maybe due to being overanxious since it was their first game as the Tennessee Titans and in their new stadium.  But he clearly had the ability, even then, to carry an offense.  Why the coaches didn't stick with it I'll never know.  As good a career as he had it could've been better if they taken the ball out of Eddie George's hands and put it in his a little earlier.  And of course he maybe has to take some of the blame for maybe not keeping himself in as good a shape as he could have, although those are just rumors.  One of the problems was his style of play.  Instead of running into defenders, slide.  There's no need to take the extra hit when you don't have to.
