Conservatives are starting to blame Donald Trump after a Republican "red wave" failed to materialize during the midterm elections.

After years of Trump choosing candidates and demanding parties back them, conservatives are starting to question whether hitching their wagon to the former president is worth it after all.

"All the chatter on my conservative and GOP channels is rage at Trump like I've never seen," said Michael Brendan Dougherty, a senior writer at National Review "'The one guy he attacked before Election Day was DeSantis — the clear winner, meanwhile, all his guys are s---ing the bed.'"

"GOP Source tells me after tonight, with Trump candidates underperforming and DeSantis winning by double digits, 2024 is a 'free for all,'" said RealClearPolitics reporter Phil Wegmann. "'Everybody in the water. If you want to take on Trump, he’s never been weaker.'"

It can be rationalized by the fact it worked. I'm not sure what you don't get about this.

unintended secondary consequences never happen! The objective is winning elections, what is not clear!  lol

Election deniers are evil , can you believe that stuff they spew ,omg!!  well, let's promote that crap,.... cuz winning

Again, I'll defer to Tim Miller's comments on all this.  Not ethically grandstanding.  It's just not okay to go along with people preaching hatred and denying observable facts to win elections.  Those voters don't just de-program themselves as Jan 6th showed.

So you edit out the part where I said I agree with you? Makes sense coming from someone standing on that hill.

I have zero idea why someone as intelligent as you would still consider themselves a Republican. Trump is still your party leader. The man is a maniacal sociopath. His sycophants still run your party and will continue to do so. DeSantis is one of them even if it was only a political maneuver to gain power.

Become an independent. The Republicans no longer exist as a party of empathy, family, and fiscal conservatism.

I actually am what I would call a Conservative Independent. Not registered to either party and not extreme right wing. The best thing for this country would be a 3rd party that had a legitimate shot at winning the election by being a moderate.

And what I said 1-2 years ago here is still true, if Trump is the nominee I will not vote in 2024. I do NOT approve of the dumbassery of MAGA (hard lesson learned) and I refuse to go Dem and support the push for woke policies.

Gone are the days of more “center-leaning” reach across the middle politicians like Bush and Clinton who weren’t extremists.

Add Obama and Biden to that list. Trump is in a class of his own.

Because Trump is a dumbass and thinks people like Herschel Walker are qualified candidates. I voted for Brian Kemp who stood up to Trump and did Not vote in the Senate race. Walker and Warnock are both nuts. Speaking of nuts, I also didn’t vote for Marjorie. I supported her primary opponent, Jennifer Strahan

@AvgJoe wanted to say that wasn't a shot at you. I respect your takes even when I don't agree.

The statement ' I should be given all of the credit and accept none of the blame' is the antithesis of our ethos as a nation, yet is frustratingly and alarmingly becoming it. I don't care about sides either. When the leader ofnthe country acts this way it gives people an excuse to do so. Fuck that guy and anyone who follows him.

Trump candidates failed but so did Cheney-endorsed candidates, right? Not sure what that says about the Republican party.

That they need to follow the blueprint of DeSantis. Govern and lead by your own ideas and don’t suck up to a psycho. Do your job well and run on your own accomplishments and you can win.

Appreciate that, the feeling is mutual.

FWIW, a lot folks in my very conservative area of GA are very much over Trump and desperately want him uninvolved with the Republican Party

Blueprint like block the feds from being observers at democratic polling places?

What kind of person do you think Desantis is? He's very very much the egotistical psycho. He's very much the facist style leader that will get you fired or kneecap your district if you don't support him 100%
