In fact, he was 9th amongst RBs last year with 30 broken tackles. Comparing him to much hyped (on these forums) inter-divisional backs, also comes out surprisingly favorable. Arian Foster had 2 more broken takles on 12 additional touches, while MJD had 7 more on 67 additional touches. In terms of broken tackles per touch, Foster was at 9.7%, MJD was at 9.6%, while CJ came in at a (not so lowly!?) rate of 9.4%. --- One additional point that merits mentioning, Javon Ringer had the best rate in the NFL, with 16 broken tackles on only 87 touches... a rate of 18.4% Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I'm interested to know how many of the 30 were jukes and how many were escaping the grasp of the defender. That's the real ?, in my opinion. My kingdom for consistency! According to some, however, the team blocked so well and those defenses were so bad that he must not have had to break tackles. titanruss Posted April 16, 2012 Report Share Posted April 16, 2012 obviously CJ only broke the tackles he felt were easy and that allowed him to reach his 1000 yard escalator. any extra broken tackles came from when he just took a nap on the grass and players tripped before they could get to him. flor clarification on what constitutes a broken tackle: "We define a "broken tackle" as one of two events: either the ballcarrier escapes from the grasp of the defender, or the defender is in good position for a tackle but the ballcarrier jukes him out of his shoes. I agree...Brian Cushing flat out owned him in space last season. No excuse for that at all...Cushing is good, but not that good. Can't blame the OL for that. He was drafted to be a homerun threat. Like every homerun threat, if there's no hole there's nowhere for him to go. CJ needs a stong OL. He's not MJD or Foster. cenj Posted April 16, 2012 Report Share Posted April 16, 2012 I think these numbers for CJ and Ringer point less to overall tackle-breaking ability, and more towards their opportunity to break tackles. I mean, did any backfield get hit more often, more quickly? Maybe it's easier to dodge 270-320 lbs DL than it is to dodge Safeties and LBs. I'm sure if other teams had allowed their RBs the opportunity to dodge DL in the backfield, they would have accumulated more broken tackles also. CJ's explosion in 2009, unfortunately, led them to believe that Oline and a complimentary power back were not a huge priority when they were needed greatly. no one remembers how we all argued about needing a power back when others here said it'd just be taking carries from CJ. With decent blocking he w as in line for another 2000yd season! no one said he had a good season but it is fairly impressive that he broke 4ypc with the blocking he had to deal with... ringer couldn't do it even with his massive amount of broken tackles. the evidence that keeps mounting from the coaches and players to independent evaluation sites clearly points to CJ not being the main problem... especially after the first 4 games.
