Titans Interested in Asante Samuel

If the Titans trade for Samuel it's nothing more than proof they didn't want to spend the signing bonus money to keep Finnegan. They are willing to give up a draft pick and a large chunk of salary cap space on a 31yr old CB to replace 27yr old Finnegan who is a better and more versatile CB.

They clearly don't think Verner is good enough to start and they don't think the young guys are good enough to play in their nickel.

Really? That's honestly what you think?

I mean, beyond the fact that Verner has shown he's better in shorter coverages, and has gone on record that he's willing (and probably been asked about) playing in a nickel role, and Samuel is one of the premiere outside corners in the league....you really think it's all about hesitance to pay a signing bonus?

Delusional.

Explain to me why you let a 27yr old CB who wanted to stay and replace him with a 31yr old CB with a bigger cap hit.

The Eagles are getting rid of a declining player, Samuel is no longer a premier CB or the Eagles wouldn't be jettisoning him.

And regardless of his good he is right now he's clearly on borrowed time. Why get get older this off season?

He was mediocre on the outside and you don't pay that kind of money for a (granted really good) nickel corner.

Remember - I was one of the few advocating we extended Finny after the first few games of the season, but the money wasn't right, he and Samuel play different roles, Verner could very likely fulfill that role, and there's still the draft to take into consideration. Stop acting like it's a pure money thing just because you think Bud is cheap. After this whole Manning pursuit, it's a laughable angle.

Oh please, Manning would have made Bud a ton of money and that could have very well be his entire motivation is pursuing Manning.

Finnegan was not mediocre on the outside, in fact he only played on the outside about 30% of the defensive plays. Plus Finny is way better inside than Verner.

And saying the money isn't right when Samuel has a 9.9 base salary is laughable, plus you have to give up a draft pick

Samuel was a top ranking corner in the league on a laughable defense for the first portion of the season. Pound for pound, is he a "better" player than Finnegan? Who knows? He's older, but don't act like his age is some indication of him slowing down - he's still shown a Hell of a lot in the last few seasons, regardless of his role. He can shut guys down on the outside, which is something Finnegan couldn't do. Hate to burst your bubble, but there was a reason this turnaround (and his walkout) pissed so many folks off this last year - Finny underperformed by most folks standards for the last several years. He excelled in the nickel-role, Hell, you and I were some of the first to point that out and agree on it, but I'm not going to act like an idiot and proclaim that that role, even though it's used more often now, is worth the kind of money as a close-to-shutdown outside corner. Finny didn't deserve Revis money, everyone agrees with that. Samuel isn't Revis, but it's affordable given our cap situation and likely (wash) situation given the potential trade/recoup in draft picks for losing Finny in free agency. They play the same position, but they're not the same players, and I know you're smart enough to know that the difference in money between paying one and paying another isn't because the owner is cheap. That's a fucking ridiculous argument, and honestly ask yourself if they'd be brash enough to sign-on Samuel on such short-term notice, why couldn't they justify it for over a fucking year with Finnegan? Your argument doesn't make sense. They're two different kinds of players, and yeah, Asante may be past his physical peak, but as much as we have crushes on Cortland, Asante's proven a Hell of a lot more, over a larger contingency of years, than Finny ever did.

A couple random points:

  • To my understanding, Samuel has already stated that he'd be willing to re-do his contract if it would facilitate a trade.

  • If this deal does happen....I'm gonna be real annoyed if they pay Samuel anything close to what Finnegan got. The way I see it, Finnegan is a more well-rounded player with more years left in the tank.....so if they're going with Samuel, they better be saving a substantial amount of money.

  • There's no way in hell the Titans are getting a compensatory 3rd next year. Comp picks are determined based on the value of biggest FA contract.... this year, Mario Williams ($16M/year) is the standard by which comp picks will be judged. So the Texans will get a compensatory 3rd (and then some) next year. Finnegan's deal was substantially less than Mario's....and this difference will be reflected in the compensatory formula. Personally, I'd probably figure on getting a compensatory 5th round pick, and thank my lucky stars if it's a 4th.

Finny would have to be terrible in St. Louis in order for the Titans to receive a 5th round pick for him.

I seriously doubt they will get anything less than a 4th round pick for him, I would practically guarantee it.

If the deal were to happen Samuel would simply take part of his 9.9 mill salary in the form of signing bonus and help with the overall cap hit this season, he's not going to give up actual money. He'd be better off forcing the Eagles to cut him and hit the open market.

Finnegan is the better player, more versatile and a hell of a lot younger. Letting Finnegan go and trading for high priced old CB would be idiotic.

In fact I'm going to believe Wyatt and say the team is not interested in taking on Samuel.

The Eagles are not letting go of a shutdown CB, that's a joke. The Eagles are very well run and good at getting rid of their declining players.

IMO, picking up Samuel at this point in his career would be comparable to the Ravens picking up Samari Rolle in 2005. As I recall, they got 2-3 solid years out of Samari, but he was clearly finished in his last year there, and probably held on a year too long.

The question is whether the Titans can expect similar results from Samuel....and is it worth the price tag and a pick?

Something else that makes me think these rumors are false is Samuels has only ever played on the left side where McCourty plays. One of the two would have to flip over to the RCB spot.
