The only reason I haven't completely jumped ship on AZ is because the AP and Fox (surprisingly) are very good calculating this stuff and they haven't flinched on their calls despite shit looking rough. But it certainly is looking rough and I'm honestly too jaded by Trump era politics to put 100% faith in anything that I can't already see in front of me. I can feel the cynicism growing. But that wasn’t Democratic Party messaging, it was a liberal minority and Black Lives Matter protesters. Which gets covered and sensationalized by the media nonstop. How do you do an "autopsy" if you can't trust the polling anymore though? I do think Pelosi needs to "pass the torch" though. We know that there was a huge GOP turnout this year, likely because Trump was on the ballot, compared to 2018 when he wasn't. Maybe these moderates in purple districts lost because this year there was goosed turnout on both sides instead of just the anti-Trump vote. Maybe there was more ticket splitting. I don't really think anyone knows what happened yet and the urge to assume events confirm your prior assumptions is always strong. Probably overly simplistic but IMO Trump is unique in that he can get all of these small/rural white counties to turn out in droves for him and pollsters are pretty shitty at polling this particular group of people. I'm sure there are other factors but that doesn't seem like a bad place to begin the Y incision.

Genuinely making an argument to defund the police is an incredibly complex policy decision, and the argument and ideas imply decades of systemic change to implement. Police reform is a tricky situation. A lot of regular Americans have empathy for the core of BLM, that we should be concerned about the death of innocent black people. Those same people will not ever accept defunding the police. So these high-handed policy decisions play right into the narratives of people who make policy as simple as possible: "They will raise your taxes", "they will implement socialist policies"! It's true there will be some tax increases but... Well, America already has socialist policies like... These are hard arguments to win on the community level. @MikeKeith2020 was right when he mentioned that it comes down to policy. Democrats do not know how to talk about policy in the same way that Republicans will. Many, many progressive policies are wildly popular. When you strip away political parties, many people support progressive ideas and even Fox polls show that. But the constant need to focus on the most complicated versions of ideas that are simple, and the acceptance of the extremism that conservatives latch onto (which doesn't really exist), is going to end up creating results like this and contributes to some of what you have seen in this election, like flipping minority voters. We have got to get better at simplifying and communicating the policies that people want. And we can't give away the rhetoric that will kick our teeth in for pie in the sky utopian policy ideas. Watching Ossoff against Perdue is the pathway forward, regardless if he wins. He was well spoken but was not brow beating. He kept it simple yet eloquent while continuing to hammer home the simple message that Georgians were getting fucked over by Perdue and his voting record. It reminded me of Obama in a certain sense. Dems should take note how he fended off attacks in a very Republican style manner by simply countering.
