NFL GM: “We played Mariota twice, beat him both times and he was awful.”

The amount of crying being done by some Titans fans about Mariota being gone on Twitter cracks me up. “That man deserves our love because he brought us back.”

No he didn’t. You know who did bring us back? Jon Robinson. That man took over a Juco roster and remade it very quickly. When he realized the QB was holding back what he built he brought in a better QB and eventually he was given the keys.

I was thinking about who that was.  It had to be someone in Buffalo's front office as they've been there two years, they beat the Titans both times and Mariota didn't have particularly good games in either one (although those certainly weren't among his worst games, he just wasn't productive enough in them).  They're the only team who it could've been.

That’s the consensus the reddit comments came to when was posted there.

Once again, props to those who understood how bad MM was as a Titan starting qb. Robinson should get a ton of credit for swinging the deal for RT17. Lets hope that the lightning stays in the bottle for him and the Titans. The league has had an off-season to plan for them.

Mariota single handedly kept the Titans from double digit wins and playoffs 2 times, once with Mularkey and Vrabel’s first year

He was “killing the franchise”

It’s undeniably true.  Just like the assessment of him being a 4th Tier guy.  27 is actually pretty damn kind.

A buddy of mine is a Raiders fan. The amount of delusion that fan base has about Mariota already is nuts. He believes he wasn’t utilized right and that Gruden will help him.

My reply? Gruden will coach Mariota tough and he will fold, or get hurt like he always does. Carr’s job has never been safer!

I want to see Gruden make Mariota cry by yelling at him when he inevitably fucks up.

Like Vince Young and even Tim Tebow before him, scrambling QBs can help your team's turnaround out of pure unpredictability and defensive adjustments.

Most of these QB are an amazing aid or compliment to teams with a good run game and solid defense as time of possession becomes such a problem for opponents.

3rd and Short is a huge issue versus a QB that can run.

However, when the QB is figured out and is not able to adjust ...

It's the only possibility.  I thought of Denver as Mariota faced them twice and was worse in those games than the two Buffalo games but they beat the Broncos the first time.  It couldn't have been an NFC team because he faced every NFC team exactly one time (which is weird).  Couldn't have been NYJ/NE because they beat them in 2018.  Couldn't have been the Dolphins because they only faced them once with that regime.  They beat the Bengals, Browns and Ravens in 2017 and he only faced the Steelers once.  I thought maybe Indy since two of his worst games of his career came in the 2018 and 2019 games against them but Ballard was also there for 2017 in which the Titans won twice and Mariota had one of his best games in the first one (the exec said he was awful in the two games so you hahve to take that into consideration as well).  Couldn't have been KC because the Titans beat them both times with Mariota and the second one was one of his best games.  Couldn't have been the Raiders because he never faced them in the Gruden/Mayock regime.  Couldn't have been the Chargers because he faced them once in the current regime.

Wait a minute, and I don't want to have a long back and forth which I know you love, but what was it you were saying about Lamar Jackson in the thread about the top 100 players?  That it doesn't matter how QBs get yards or something like that?  There has likely never been a more prototypical scrambling QB than Lamar Jackson.

Read my last line, "However, when the QB is figured out and is not able to adjust ... "

Not. Able. To. Adjust

VY, Tebow and Mariota were all one-read QBs who didn't at least have a rocket arm.

VY was a headcase, Tebow couldn't throw, and Mariota was skidish in the pocket. None of them could run well enough to offset their issues as a passer. But their scrambling ability made them helpful at first ... even though they ultimately sucked.

Jackson hasn't been consistently figured out and is a better thrower than any of the QBs above. Even Cam Newton hasn't been completely figured out, he's had a long career.

If Mariota could dominate as a scrambler he'd probably still be on the team, but he couldn't even do that at an above average level. Just because you're a scrambling QB doesn't mean you're a great scrambling QB.

It’s absolutely the Bills. But they need to be careful, Josh Allen may be worse than Mariota.

I've noticed over the years that if you're a somewhat shitty passer you can still get by if you have a rocket arm. Josh Allen has a chance because he has that.

EDIT: And when I say chance I mean a chance to have a career better than Mariota's overall.
