Come on Titans
I saw this for the first time the other day....I never knew “I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races … I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races from living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be a position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.” - Abraham Lincoln https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/did-lincoln-racism-equality-oppose/
Starkiller
He was against slavery. That doesn’t mean he supported equal rights. He was a liberal relative to his era, but not of ours. If he grew up today then presumably his beliefs on race would be different.
WG53
He is quite frankly the most overrated president we have ever had. People give him way more credit than he deserves. He did the right thing for the wrong reasons yet people talk about him with reverence. He was no saint.

He eventually got there but the aforementioned stance that blacks, even if free, should not have the same political and social standing tells you all you need to know. He also favored Colonization - i.e. send all the blacks to a colony in Liberia and later Central America......

Come on T is good people. He isn’t denigrating him. I think he is showing how the history of this country is oft misunderstood. Lincoln didn’t care about equal rights until he realized the union and equality were inseparable. To me, at least, it’s a really interesting realization when you think about the fact Lincoln came up from nothing. The distinct notion of otherness is prevalent throughout history, to the point poor whites still in 2020 think of their fellow black citizens as less. Like I said above, Frederick Douglass was instrumental in moving Lincoln as a person and as a president. It is really great reading.

Yeah, so did Marcus Garvey and Malcolm X. You’re taking history out of context.
