"An official with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said in an interagency call on May 12 reported on by Politico that the guardsmen will face a “hard stop” on June 24 to prevent them from reaching the 90 days of duty credit needed to qualify for early retirement and education benefits." The government regularly bends the rules to save money at the expense of service members. When we go to the field we actually have to pay back part of our BAH to cover the cost of MREs. If you go more than 30 days, you're entitled to 250 family separation allowance so units will deploy for 29 days and return. That stuff happens all the time. Meanwhile those higher in rank abuse TDY rules to travel to a hostile country on the 30th and return on the 1st in order to get two full months of hostile fire pay (they shut this loophole down). I say all that just to point out that these types of shenanigans happen on all sides all the time. The number of Soldiers who get out and commit fraud by applying for disability that they don't actually need would probably appall the average tax payer (and me) but for many it's just part of the game. I figured as much after reading through what TGO quoted. It sucks for the guys/families being dicked around, but I imagine it happens frequently. It's fair to be pissed off by this, all the same.
