That said, if he doesn't build on last years improvment... his gace period for development is over. He's one player who benefited from Britts inury. They liked him enough to extend his stay here at least a few months. Maybe they see something in him and what he started to do this year? We are now down to 14 decisions. I think the only two that would shock me are Ruud and Scott. Both guys will get more on the market then we will likely we willing to give. Ruud has to be gone (as does Scott). His improvement to 55 catches in season 4 is similar to how Derrick Mason finally came on towards the end of his first deal. I like that we aren't sitting on our hands and that we are taking care of our 'role players'. You simply can't replace 17 guys in an offseason. We are now down to 14 decisions. I think the only two that would shock me are Ruud and Scott. Both guys will get more on the market then we will likely we willing to give. Be curious to see who we chip away with next. I'm betting on Tim Shaw and Fernando Velsaco with Jordan Babineaux as the third possibility. Sounds like we are trying to get Jason Jones done as well. From my perspective you have to lay the foundation before you start shopping for the granite countertops and wood floors. Stephens, Hawk and Otto all feel like foundation to me. We will know the budget for the sexy signings once we have the rest of the foundation pieces on board. Velasco is restricted so they will simply tender him and be done with it. No one is going to give up picks for him so it is safe to say he will sign and return. Jones is interesting. He is a talented player without a real position. He is a 3 tech that they tried to play 7 and 9 tech with. He is a good DT but they should really decrease his reps from a couple of years ago if they want him to stay healthy which means he has less value to the team. If the price is right, that is a very nice signing. If it's for signifigant money then it was foolish. Just my opinion. Shaw is an important signing though I don't think he is vital. I do think he will be back unless someone offers him a starting gig which is unlikely. Babs is a likely signing simply because he was a quality starter this year and will be affordable. Ball is another guy I think they would like to bring back if he doesn't retire or get offered a sizeable deal to play somewhere else. With all of the DE's available hopefully he will be undervalued. Like I said in another thread, I think using JJ like Klug would maximize his ability and give him a better chance to stay healthy Use Casey and another big DT on early downs Then use Klug and JJ to rush the passer I hope that's how we're viewing him He's not an ideal fit for most defenses, but he's a talent I hope we keep him Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Hawkins, 47 catches for 470 yards as the 3rd or 4th WR on a team with a QB who threw for 3500 yards. Quite honestly you would have to be in somce alternate universe to think Meachum is that much of a better player than Hawk right now and if we signed Hawk for about a mil per year we got a bargain. If he falls off we can cut him. Hawkins did basically nothing his first three years but had a breakout sason and as a depth guy alone is worth it. I agree its a bargain, but we are running out of numbers to add to the WR core. If we are relying on Britt to be the only impact player in that core (I'm not the biggest Washington fan) then I'm not comfortable with that idea. Barring an upset we have the same group as last year and only Britt being a difference maker. IMO with the curse at the WR position we had as a franchise, I would want to have more than 1 impact WR on the team (ATL, DAL, NYG, etc). With the draft most likely focusing on defense and o line, I was and am hoping we make an impact (within reason of course) in FA. A guy like Meachem is inconsistent yes, but he is a good blocker, a bigger target, has the ability to take the top off a defense, and has a history of doing it. He hasn't necessarily lived up to his 1st round status...but I'm sure he doesn't have as much mental errors as Hawk, plus Hawk is pretty much a one year wonder. He said that Palmer's teaching really helped him. Hawk also said that he can catch balls from both MH and JL, but JL has more arm strenghts because he's younger. Actually he had 47 catches for 470 yards with just 1 TD. And contrary to what Code thinks, Hawk is no Derrick Mason (not remotely). Dinger openly admitted he didn't like rotating receivers and preferred guys who knew the system cold over guys who didn't but might have more upside.
