Desperately Seeking QBs

Take a look at a history of QBs drafted over the last 11 years.

FIRST QB TAKEN

2018 Mayfield    13 drafted, 10-12  rostered still

2017 Trubisky    10 drafted, 8 rostered still

2016 Goff           15 drafted, 9 rostered still

2015 Winston    7 drafted, 5 rostered still

2014 Bortles      14 drafted, 6 rostered still

2013 Manuel      11 drafted, 3 rostered still

2012 Luck           11 drafted, 8 rostered still

2011 Newton      13 drafted, 4 rostered still

2010 Bradford     14 drafted,  1 rostered still

2009 Stafford      11 drafted, 2 rostered still

2008 Ryan            13 drafted, 3 rostered still

It is surprising how few QBs are drafted and how few last more than a handful of years-- many of those with a second or third team (i.e. Gabbert)

2012 had a lot of keepers who have lasted years.

These calculations are off the top of my head and probably 95% accurate. I wonder if there is this kind of data for FA QBs?

Solving the QB problem is much harder than any of us realize. I've long advocated taking a QB ever year or every other year by Round 4 so that you have three good ones.. because you never know what is going to happen to your QB. Keep the best and trade the rest.

Watched this video on Brady.   Proves nobody knows shit on evaluating QB's.

Very true-not much better than throwing darts. Those shirtless pics of Brady are always funny.  There was nothing physically there to make you think this guy was the goat.  They haven’t figured out how to evaluate that mindset for the draft.  Makes you wonder how many Tom Brady’s went undrafted and are selling insurance or managing a Walgreens right now.

Some enterprising fellows ought to organize a sub-combine for QBs who are not invited to THE Combine. I watched Kyle Allen from UH in the last Panther game and he looked pretty darn good-- not invited to The Combine and not drafted. Seems like the QB position needs to be treated with more priority than it seems to be.

Not everyone gets to be a NE and land a Brady as almost an after-thought or the Dolts on whom the Universe smiles come Generational QB Time with Manning 1-1 in 1998 and Luck 1-1 in 2011-- dang, even Bert Jones 1-1 in 1973 was very solid for them for a long run. The took a bum at 1-1 in 1983 in Art Schlichter. That's a lot of 1-1 picks at QB but they got 30 years and counting of top-notch QB over 45 years. We got 15 or so with Pastorini, McNair, and Mariota. I'm not even counting VY or Locker as contributing to top-notch QB play, although you could make a case for VY. Nevertheless, none of them were 1-1 picks for us.

No, you can't.

Sure you can. I'm not saying his whole career, but he was a dynamic and dangerous QB at times for stretches (ROY and twice named to the Pro Bowl). He certainly flamed out.

Peyton Manning's rookie year overall was not stellar, but the "greatness" of his career outlasted VY's by a factor of 12 or so.

Money is a big part of the problem.  Rookie QBs were getting monster deals.  They fixed that, but did Bortles deserve the big $$ option, Mariota 20M.  Jimmy G for Jimmy "got over."  The salaries are so high, teams can't afford to develop a backup.  There's a lot of people who feel Mariota is still developing/was developed wrong.  Suppose they had a sys where QB had a year or two to develop.  Mayfield has done well, but those other top picks got thrown into the fire on bad teams.  Jackson is winning games, but he got half a season and is playing on a playoff team.

Shinny new rookie QBs sell tickets, so it will probably keep going on the same way.

Just think.  In 1971 when we drafted Dante (round 1 pick 3), our very next pick was Dickey (round 3).  We went ALL IN on finding a QB.

Maybe that's what it takes if you are in search of a franchise QB.

Joel, it been demonstrated ad nauseum on this board that VY only really had success his rookie year, then when everyone figured out how to play him he sucked from the then on.  And he didn't just flame out, he blew himself up in year 3 and was one of the worst playoff QBs in history in year 2.

First off, I'm not Joel.

VY seems to have only started one game his 3rd year. His 4th and 5th he started 10 games each year and threw 10 TD passes each year. And I think he won about 2/3rds of his starts

You probably noticed this, too, but Dickey was the very next QB selected after Pastorini in that 1971 draft-- two rounds later.

The point I was making was that our first two picks were QBs, and that maybe that's what should be done when searching for a franchise QB :)
