Scotty's definitely more down on Mariota than most, if not all.

He still has 2 more years under contract. Plenty of time left to prove himself before a long term decision has to be made. But the fact he hasn’t done it yet after 3 years is a bit concerning.

Changing coaches, coordinators, offensive systems has to account for something though. I'm getting tired of beating the Brees drum, but it was brought up in this thread. I'm confident to say without fully digging in that for many of the "successful" QBs, they have at least had the Fortune of having some consistency in this aspect which allows for the quarterback to start refining and mastering a system in their second and third seasons under the system. The constant changes have to be seen as a setback in Mariota's development as he's had to start from the ground floor over and over again instead of getting polished. 

 

I'm sure there's other QBs that are exceptions and overcome changes of coaches and schemes early, and some may even look at last year as year 2 under Mularkey, but I don't think it was a good system, nor was it designed to use Mariota's strengths as a QB. 

 

It needs some time is all I'm saying. His injuries are more of a legitimate concern to me than whether or not he'll be able to learn and thrive in Lafleur's system and tutelage.

There was no change in coaching or scheme last season, so that doesn’t account for the drop off from 2016 to 2017. It might make for a good excuse this year though.

Mularkey wanted a Kordell Stewart for his offense like he did in Pittsburgh. I don't think it would have mattered if he had Aaron Rodgers as his QB, he would have still tried to force him into the role he wanted for his system. Mularkey wanted a Jeep and didn't know how to handle a Ferrari..

Also, I heard somewhere that Mularkey has a history of being successful in year one, but then his offenses would sharply decline in year two wherever he's gone. I'm ashamed to say I haven't confirmed this yet with my own research yet either, but it's worth throwing out there..

This has nothing to do with anything. The only other place he was head coach for 2 years the Bills went from Drew Bledsoe to JP Losman.

But I appreciate that you just made an excellent case for why we should (not) be using Mularkey's tenure and second season running a team/offense as a support for Mariota's failures..

people argue it’s not fair to focus on a few throws in preseason. I’d argue a 4 year vet making those mistakes is frightening, especially coming off the season he just had and half of 2016. 

 

As as far as the coaching changes, they go hand in hand. Are the coaches holding back the QB or is the QBs potential getting people fired? I prefer the new staff vs the old one and they won’t be getting fired over Maroita. 

 

We’ll find out this season o e way or another

Did you watch other preseason games? Roethlisberger missed throws, Brady missed a few throws, Smith missed throws. It's preseason for a reason.

though to @OILERMAN's point, adjusting to the busted coverage and feeding Davis for a touchdown is the play that a veteran QB should make
