I don't care that his motives weren't pure. I care that gave thousands of people who's lives were horrible a chance at something more. Actions over words. As long as I've followed politics republicans say the right things regarding race and class but the actions never match that rhetoric. It reminds me of several years ago a Rasmussen poll about how different races viewed other races, and their own, in terms of racism. This poll was highlighted by the right. It made it's rounds on all the right wing rags and posted by right wingers. The source of their glee? It stated 31% of black people felt black people were more racist. It was as if they had found the proof they were looking for to show that black truly are more racist than white people. One might question what drives their jubilation for this poll. Upon further examination of the poll they did not read, just posted the narrative and a link to the article (yeah this is nothing new), there was an intriguing aspect of the poll. All groups were at 39% or lower for the different beliefs.....except one.....49% of Republicans (and conservatives) felt black people were the most racist. Half of an entire political party felt black people were more racist. Quiet the interesting result. I asked our right wing friends at the time what they thought about half the GOP believing black people were more racist and no one responded. What does it ultimately mean? Oh I'm sure everyone will draw their own conclusions, but it certainly explains behavior of many of our right friends regarding race. I get the joke, but he was actually compassionate towards the escaped slaves and in good conscience was not going to return them to a situation where the repercussions would be severe. They formed the first and most famous of what became known as contraband camps in Corinth, MS. One of the assumptions and arguments against ending slavery was that the freed blacks would be lost and unable to take care of themselves without their masters. The camp at Corinth was a direct contradiction of that. On their own they built a school and church and started planting gardens and were wholly self sufficient. Unfortunately, the troops were ordered to withdraw several months later and the camp was disbanded. It's a very interesting and positive chapter in what was a very dark period of our history. Republicans and conservatism are not one in the same. Conservatives were the Democrats basically a half century ago, and vice versa. Sure, you can blame the Democrats for all of that, but the conservatives ran the democratic party up until the mid 60s. So, today's Republicans are yesterday's Democratic KKK lovers. If you *think* for even half a heartbeat that democrat party leaders like FDR, Truman, Adlai Stevenson et al were conservatives, then it's apparent you don't know the meaning of the word conservative, in either the classic or the political sense.
