Robinson Must Overhaul Secondary In Offseason

We are not having a complete overhaul of the secondary. You cannot have a very good player at every position It's not realistic....Every team has holes.

And we don't even need to have real overhaul we could have a good secondary with minimal change.

As far as the safety position I love Eric Berry and Jamal Addams too but I highly doubt we even see a new face at safety. Byard will be the full time starter like he was drafted to be and I believe Searcy will start opposite of him. We will more then likely resign Stafford too.

So no real big changes at safety. But Byards development and possibly taking that next step and becoming a good safety would be huge for the secondary. He's always been a big play safety and we have seen flashes of that this year already.... A guy with very good athleticism and ball skills who is capable of creating turnovers. He is a very smart player with a great work ethic....I think he could have a very good year and big impact on the defense next year.

McCourty is under contract next year and will be the starter next year. His play from here out will determine 2018 but I have little doubt he won't be starting again for us next year. I don't think he's great at all and sometimes maybe even a liability but with an improved defense he could again be a quality starter.

The outside corner position opposite of McCourty is where I believe we will see the only new face. If we do not address this in free agency then one of the first round picks will likely be a CB.

My vote would be for Adoree Jackson! I think he will be the best CB to come out of this draft. He has ridiculous speed and athleticism. He brings amazing speed and big play ability To a defense that lacks in both those areas. He plays his best again the best he's very clutch and makes big plays in big situations.

Adoree Jackson would also give us a very dangerous returner. Averaged 15 yards a PR and almost 30 on KO with 3 TDs...With his speed and agility he is capable of taking it back anytime he touches the ball... He is easily one of the best returners in college football.

NB I think will be someone in house already. We just spent 2 picks last year on Corners and both looked promising in camp...Hopefully Simms or Reed improve and can become a quality NB.

Outside of the secondary I think we will draft an ILB in the first and an athletic playmaker in the middle would greatly benefit the passing defense. We have been torched by TEs this year.

I would love to sign Jamie Collins or draft Zach Cunningham. Both very athletic explosive LBers who could really help this defense and passing defense.

A young player like Simms Stepping up in the NB role and Byard at safety with new additions like Adoree Jackson and Zach Cunningham could really turn around this passing defense. And that only consists of adding a CB and ILBer in the first round.

The secondary is the undisputed worse unit on this team. Who is the playmaker? Byard is going to be a great safety, but we have plenty of cap space, 2 first round picks, and 2 third round picks. With 3 secondary players, we could turn our biggest weakness into a strength. I don't understand this rule that says we have to have holes in our secondary. We have the cap space and draft picks to attack every hole on this roster. Why do we have to leave one? We have this window where our QB is not getting paid major $s. That will soon come to an end. We need to go for our superbowl now. Seattle did the exact same thing. Oakland shot its wad last year. We are not the Titans of 2 years ago. With the right moves, we can contend next year. (See oakland) We have to go for it.

I know it is not popular to say it on this board, but JRob has already done a good job of upgrading the secondary this year.  Just think of where we would be without Blake, McCain and Johnson(despite the universal disdain that they receive on this board).  No, they are not the final solution, but are a good stopgap measure that has kept us  from being 2-8, and put us in a position to really move toward elite next year. They are a testament to how horrible our secondary was when JRob got here(thank you Webster) And by the way, don't expect JRob to sign a high dollar free agent for next year.  It is just not in his DNA.  So you can forget Eric Berry.

I cannot agree on Berry when LSU Adams is in this draft is a way better prospect, younger, and does not have the cancer history.  Risk vs reward fovors Adams.

You just like Adams because he is from LSU. Lol, I kid. I like Adams as well. That is the thing, there are a number of paths we can take to really upgrade the weakest area on this roster. There are literally at least 3 different paths we can take. All would be huge upgrades.

Why are we even thinking of Eric Berry? Draft picks are realistic. Free agency is too much of an unknown commodity.

Exactly.

I would seriously shit my pants if we signed Berry. I highly doubt he hits the market but there is rumor in MO he will due to KC not wanting to pay for 2 million dollar insurance in case cancer came back which is unlikely.

There may be burnt bridges there.

I can't recall if KC can tag him again. I don't believe they can?

How do you know what's in J Rob's DNA. He has been a GM for all of 1 year. Sure, he came up under Belicheck, but J Rob is his own man. You have no idea how he will handle a team that could be a contender if the right moves are made. It takes a little longer than a year to format a GM profile.

I think they can, but it would be extremely cost prohibitive.

a lot of draft analysts are really down on Adoree Jackson, they say he is a freak athlete but doesn't have the fluid hips and change of direction to be a true cover corner.

When you watch him he moves like a corner. He's very fast and fluid. Good hip movement He has great short area quickness and change of direction.

The negative I have seen have talked about technique, beck pedal, etc which is almost expected because the guy has played all over the place for USC he couldn't just dedicate himself to defense like some.

I like Jackson because I think some of his negatives can be improved while he develops at the next level but even while he is developing at corner he would be a dynamic returner for us.

Im not sure there is a real clear cut #1 corner I really like Lattimore too and Humphrey is a really good player.

Lattimore has been excellent but it wouldn't surprise me if he stayed in college another year.

I honestly would be happy with either of the 3.

Another guy I really like who doesn't get talked about near as much or at least I don't see it is Sidney Jones he is a guy whose almost been a difference maker since his freshman year. He would have to add some weight At the next level but he has the skill set to be a number 1 corner in the league. He might have the best ball skills of any corner in the class. He has great potential In the end I wouldn't be suprised to see Jones becoming the best corner to come out of this class.

If it was possible I would love to trade down with our later first round pick draft Sidney Jones toward the end of the first round and pick up a 2nd round.

Agreed. We could fix the secondary in the offseason and if our offense is still play at a high level in '17 between that and our improved defense we would actual be very tough to beat because we would have a potential top ten offense and top ten defense. We have two years if Robinson wants the team to make a run upgrade the secondary we already have a pretty good line. The catch is after the next two years it gets tougher. I think we all know that there is a good chance in 2019 Mariota will become one of the the highest paid or the highest paid QB in the NFL.

JRobs DNA is the Patriot way.  When is the last time they signed a high dollar FA.  We have a few players like Lewan and Mariota who will eventually need big contracts, so we have to be careful how much money we spend, unless we are sure it will take us to the SuperBowl in the first year or unless we minimize the cap hit for the time our important players need big contracts.

A stud ILB would certainly be a huge upgrade for this team. They are weak up the middle.

I could see drafting a CB early but honestly I think it's more likely they would go for a CB in round 2 given an average draft. We will just have to wait until draft time to see the board.
