Titans Fans are "Fair Weather"

Guy at work is arguing that Titans fans are a bunch of fair weather fans. I argue that we are not. We are like small market expansion team (basically). I believe it takes several generations grandad to dad to son at least to build up the nostalgia necessary to get the Browns effect. He of course is a goddamn Patriots fan.

We don't have a Superbowl. Nashville is a huge melting pot. We are less than 2 decades old. It's to be expected.

Am I wrong?

This is the worst place to debate about that. We are in a distinct minority of our fandom and obsession with the sport and specifically the team.

Hell, it's tough not to be fair weather with how bad this team is. The stadium doesn't sell out, usually outnumbered by the better teams in the stands, fans in general have said there is a completely different attitude back in early 2000's. That to me is a huge indicator, general interest when the teams get better.

Hockey is my perfect example of  fairweather fans. Until playoff time, people don't start caring. I guarantee you the whole state would be completely different if the Titans were habitual contenders (the definition of fairweather), but the same can be said about most teams.

The franchise dates back to 1960 and no one can change that.  I've been around the whole time and I can tell you for a fact---there hasn't been much fair weather.  I'm ready for some.

I think he's missing the point of a fair weather fan. I always thought it meant you only cheer for them when they do good? The last I checked, I've been a fan since 98. We've been pretty bad. I'm still a fan.

This.

SleepingTitan's friend is very confused about what a fair weather fan is.

When the Titans win a Super Bowl and the team suddenly has fans coming out of the woodwork, and then eventually go back to not supporting the team when they lose, those will be the fair weather fans.

Which actually agrees with his point too. Back in the early 2000's the stadium was rocking and supposedly everyone loved the Titans. Now that we suck, those fans are gone and back to following the Vols or whoever Tennessee actually cheers for.

The fact is every team has fair weather fans, it just depends on how many die hards are able to drown them out. In the Titans case (because we have been so bad for so long) the fans are fewer and far between so it is much more noticeable when those fans do come out of the woodwork.

True that the die hards will support the team thru thick and thin but only thru winning will the team attract more fans.  Especially since NFL is so expensive, fans have to pick and choose how to spend their money.

Yeah, I think it goes without saying that every team has fair weather fans.

But the Titans have been largely irrelevant for over a decade, sans 2008. So unless this co-worker is referring to fans from that era, which is a moot point considering that was, what 17 years ago, then who is he calling fair weather fans?

The fans the Titans have that have stuck through the drought all these years are anything but fair weather fans.

This is why even after I've tried "getting into" the Vols, I can't get past their obnoxious fans. It sours me on Vols football every time. Everyone wants to act like the Vols represent Tennessee just because they have the state name, but they are KNOXVILLE'S team. No one would EVER mistake the Commodores as being a Tennessee team and they're located in the state's capitol. Granted, Vanderbilt isn't exactly a school for everyone, but then again neither is the University of Tennessee. Not really. MTSU is more along the lines of a "school for everyone".

Anyway... all that to say, fuck the Vols. I mean, Go Vols! But still... fuck the Vols.

There is the "entertainment town" factor too.

Nashville, despite being a mid sized city, is an entertainment town. If the locals aren't being entertained, they'll spend the dough on something else. Plenty to do here.

Not much different than LA, Miami, New Orleans, Atlanta, etc in that respect.

It's not like Green Bay, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, etc where the town's whole identity is built around the sports teams.

These were the 3 teams I could think of that weren't band-wagon even though nationally the Packers, Pats, Steelers and Cowboys are the horses that are pulling the term band-wagon

Cleveland is interesting because I am not sure how many people would "jump on" because they likely have been a fan of a different team their entire life.
