2 days till FA.....who we signing?

Well, our favorite time of the year has arrived & I don't know about you guys but I'm psyched. I figured I'd start this thread so we can post who we think we'll sign, who we want to sign, who we don't want to sign, really, whatever you want. So with that, here's how I see it going:

1)I think we'll be very aggressive, or at least more aggressive than some here think. I fully expect 2-3 name signings.

2)I think we'll sign Doug Martin in the first day or two. This just makes too much sense, we have a big need,  the TB connection, and the fact that you couldnt draw up a more ideal back for Mularkey's offense. Chris Ivory is the back up plan.

3)I think we'll go after Eric Weddle. This guy is exactly the type of player Robinson values, smart, tough, team leader, always in the right place. He had a down year with some injuries but these types of vets are always a great value. I think he has 2-3 top notch seasons left, he'll provide great coverage & much needed professionalism.

4)If we don't go after Weddle, we'll go after Mitchell Schwartz. The team has made it clear RB, OL, and secondary need to be upgraded. It's becoming obvious that unless we trade down, the pick is Tunsil or Ramsey. FA should give us the answer to that question.

5)I think we sign my boy, Damon "Snacks" Harrison. Yes, I realize the NT isn't as important as it used to be, with all the passing & sub packages used, but this guy is some kind of run defender. He simply cannot be moved. And with the way DQ Jones came on against the run the 2nd half of last year, folks will have a tough go of it in the trenches against us, by proxy improving the pass defense. LeBeau's system is about stuffing the run to set up 3rd & longs, more advantageous blitz opportunities to force the ball out early & in front of the corners. The NT & 5 tech in this defense are 2 gap, block occupiers, not penetrators.

Get ready for disappointment Face. It's unlikely they sign a single big name FA and thats the way it should be.

Why? FA certainly has its place in building a team. Obviously consistently good drafting is the key to building a long term winner but some well timed, big name signings oftentimes play a big role in righting the ship.

I think we get 1 starter on the OL and 1 starting RB to start off our free agency campaign, who exactly got no idea.

I also think we would be crazy to go above $5 million a season for Doug Martin, Ivory is a perfect lower cost option for what Mularkey wants to do.

Let's all hope we don't sign anyone of value. That way people can bitch when our roster that is devoid of talent goes 2-14 next year. Give me a fucking break, signing someone that is a top FA should be expected. It's not a strategy you use every year, but it is when it fits the right spot (Schwartz or Martin) that is a huge need.

Agree with Doug Martin and Damon Harrison, probably 6-8m per year with large signing bonuses for both. Wisniewski will also come in.

Martin RB, Harrison NT and Wisniewski C, in the first few days.

Leaving us no closer to the #1pick conundrum.

Got a funny feeling we will be in for Janoris Jenkins too.

Really looking forward to the Robinson regime starting on Wednesday.

surprised at the amount of people here who seemingly are happy to pay a RB in the $7-8 million a season range, just seems crazy to me, surely the money would be better spent on CB depth or another OL starter.

It's just cap space, we have a lot of it. It beats the hell out of using pick 33 on a back with how deep this draft is at DL.

BTW, I know somebody is going to chime in now & say to just use a mid to late rounder on one, that they're easy to find. Well, that's a false narrative. I read an article a few weeks ago that said something like only 11% of the RB's that finished with high fantasy production, I believe 180 points or more a year, were drafted in the 3rd rd or later.

I agree with the no drafting of a RB with the 33rd pick, will likely be way to much value at the WR/S/DT positions

I think a lot of people look at how conservative the best teams like the Pats, Packers, and Steelers are in FA & assume that FA isn't an important piece of the pie. Well, they have QB's making over $20 mil a year & stacked rosters that they have to retain. We have a franchise QB we're paying peanuts & a terrible roster. Two completely different scenarios.

In general, I probably wouldn't happy with it either. But they've been talking about improving the running game all offseason so much to the point where it's going to be a huge let down if they don't do something significant. And if it came down to 7-8 M for a proven guy like Martin, or spending a high pick on a RB, I'll pick the proven guy in this situation. Especially in a RB class that looks kinda weak to me. I'm not advocating Martin. There's a few other FA RB like Ivory, Forte, and Miller I also like who will be cheaper. But I'd be surprised if we don't pursue Martin. Top RB in FA. 2nd in rushing this season. Robinson knows him. We need RB.
