I am actually surprised at the results of this poll so far.

When I started the thread, I was curious to see how it would turn out.  While I knew the two "no" options would constitute the majority, I was expecting at least 20% or 30% of posters wanted Mularkey based on reading other threads the past few weeks.

Rarely do this high of a percentage of people agree on anything.  That says a lot about what a mistake it would be for them to give the job to Mularkey.

There were more people defending VY after he left.

Mularky's record doesn't get to me so much, he coached shitty rosters and didn't perform miracles. I doubt most coaches make much if any more than what he made of those situations.

The biggest issue to me is the offensive philosophy Mularkey generally seems to favor doesn't best fit Mariota's skillset imo.

So because our secondary wasnt aware of where the WRs were lined up, its Mularkeys fault?

Not Dick LeBeaus? Not Griffins or Coxs or Sensabaugh or Searcys? Just Mularkey and that is reason enough for him not to be considered? I see.

If thats the case, Jeff Fisher shouldnt have been fired for the simple fact that in 2008 he lined CJ up out wide, with no one gaurding him and he ran for, what? A 80 yard TD reception...

That wasn't specifically Mularkey's fault. But the team, as a whole, wasn't ready. Plain and simple. We were out of that game in the 1st quarter.

It's funny.  I don't want to see Mularkey as the HC but it's more in his low key approach as the leader of the team.  If he were a color, he'd be beige.  I just don't see him leading a team to the playoffs.

As an OC, I honestly would be OK with him - he ran pretty diverse offenses in Pittsburgh and Atlanta with success.  Remember, they were running Whisenhunt's system this year.  Personally, he seems to be a good, honest guy and I think he's much more of an OC type than a HC.

No.  Also, I really don't think they are that stupid.  They brought in a decent GM choice.  I'll wait and see who is named HC.  I spent too much energy thinking how pissed off I would be if they hire Chip Kelly.  I'm taking a freakout break on Coach M.  On a similar note, 49er fan is totally pissed with the Chip Kelly hire.

Every head coaching job is now full except for this one. How can this job go to Mularkey with all playoff candidates still available. Even AAS/Underwood can't be stupid enough to want Mularkey over McDaniels, Patricia, Shula, etc., right? Fuck I hope not. Jon Robinson needs to be pleading this case.

The thing about Mularkey is I think he's a good coach despite the record.  He went 9-7 in his first year in Buffalo, losing heartbreaker after heartbreaker and winning 6 of the final 7.  The 2nd year they were bad with JP Losman and Kelly Holcomb and finished 5-11.  Then in Jacksonville he had absolutely no chance, being saddled with Blaine Gabbert.  And of course he had this past year with the Titans.  I realize he resigned in Buffalo because he didn't want to fire coaches and this is going to sound silly but he's never been given a real chance to put his system in place with a real QB.

That being said, he absolutely cannot continue with the Titans.  A change needs to be made.  It has nothing to do with him and I think he may be a better coach than someone who is going to replace him.  I'd be fine if he remained as the TE's coach.  But for the sake of the fans a change needs to be made.  The guy who was on the staff the last two years getting 5 wins and coached 9 of those games just can't remain.  The franchise needs to signal to the fans that they're trying to change.  Keeping Mularkey will not do that.

I think on the football side of things Mularkey can do the job.  I think he's a lot more creative than people give him credit for and his offensive approach is more modern than people want to admit.  But he's never going to be given a real fair chance as the minute they start 0-1 fans will revolt calling for his head and no one will go to games.  The pressure on Mularkey would be enormous and the expectations unrealistic.  He would almost have to finish at least 10-6 for people to buy in and give him a chance.  This is an absolute no-brainer if they want to get their fans back and change the overall feel of the team.

And again, it has nothing to do with Mularkey.  I'd say the same no matter who the interim head coach is.  When the franchise has results like they've had the last two years with fan support at an all-time low a fresh start is needed.

And I almost never say that ownership and management should listen to the fans.  But this is one time that they need to, for the long-term health of the franchise.

I could stomach Mularkey getting the job if he blew them away in the interview and sold his vision. With the reports that some GM candidates bowed out or were eliminated because they didn't want him it shows the Adams family isn't serious about conducting an exhaustive search and that flat out sucks balls.

McDermott over Shula any day for me.

Mularkey wouldn't be at the top of my list, but I don't think he would be a disasterous hire as a HC in terms of his ability. He hasn't coached a team with any talent since his winning first season in Buffalo. But he has been a good OC, which is what got him head coaching opportunities. I'm sure teams would be trying to hire him as OC if he were available for interviews.

The biggest problem would be PR. Fans want a clean break from the old regime. I don't really blame Mularkey for Wiz's failures, but I understand why people want a totally new coaching staff.

I'd lean towards McDaniels at this point. His personality concerns me, but he is a good offensive mind. But it isn't as if he had a good record as HC either, much like Mularkey. Hue Jackson and Chip Kelly both got fired as HC.

There isn't some elite candidate out there for the Titans. That's the only reason that Mularkey would be palatable at all. Hell, I would consider a short extension for Mularkey and if he bombs in 2016 they could find a new up and coming HC then.
