Changing the subject real quick, is it me or are the Steelers looking better on defense this year? They've been pretty good, any chance Butler is doing a better job than LeBeau did recently?

I don't think their defense looks any better.

I didn't like the call to go for it on the 2nd 4th down attempt in OT but there is no question the play was there and Vick just blew it.

Did you think they should have attempted the FG or punt?

I think they've looked pretty good, they completely shut down the Rams & the Ravens really didn't move the ball much. It looks better than last year so far.

I actually like what DL has done here a lot. If not for a few secondary breakdowns we'd be right at the top in points given up. We have played a weak schedule though.

I like the design of the play where they intercepted Flacco. The rolling coverage totally fooled him.

FG there based on Scobee's overall track record.

I'd be more willing to subscribe to that if Scobee had been their kicker for awhile and was successful there.

The guy came over in a trade a month ago and has been pretty bad the entire time. His stats aren't good and they don't show that some of the kicks he's actually made weren't pretty. It's not just FG's. He's already missed a PAT and had another hit the upright and bounce in.

I wouldn't be able to ignore his most recent horrific past month and the fact he already missed two shorter FG attempts earlier in the game. I can't blame Tomlin one bit for the decision to go for it instead of having Scobee try to kick a long FG in a stadium notorious for being unfriendly to kickers.

The Steelers defense is still pretty bad. The Rams had some really bad drops, especially their TE, dropping two big gainers including one TD. Kaepernik doesn't even count, that guy is turning into Akili Smith

I noticed that as well. They're apparently meshing their blitzing D with the cover 2, that play seemed a bit of a hybrid.

great point. I can't really counter it.

Nor would I disagree with kicking the FG there for the reason you gave.

I can only imagine how roasted Tomlin would be getting right now if he trots Scobee out there and he misses for the third time in the game.

I agree.  I never liked Bironas.  He scared me every time he was out there.

He missed one I believe in each game.

Having a steady kicker is more important than several positions, not the least of which is running back.  I think Belichick understands that.

Ummm...what? You never liked Bironas? You didn't trust him as a kicker? If that's true, then you don't trust ANY kickers:

he missed makable FGs in every playoff game he was a part of. That's where this comes from and rightfully so.

Ah, I see. So it's an issue of whether he comes through when it matters most.

What's interesting is that even though he made those misses, which were big, I still trusted him, even in playoff games. Every kicker misses some, and he was so consistent, overall, that I never lost trust in him.

But yes, you are right...there's definitely a reason why people worried during playoff games. I thought the original comment about never liking Bironas was a broader statement than that, though.
