I was wrong about Mariota

I am trying to think of any QB who was ever drafted in the top 10 who did not have the tools to make it and the only guy I am coming up with is Vince Young. Not because he was retarded...this you can't really totally tell and there have probably been other retarded guys drafted that high (Ryan Leaf)...I'm talking physically. There was no way VY could ever throw the ball good enough and with that jacked up shit side release to ever justify a top 10 pick. Tbe rose bowl created a crazy circumstance where measurables and star power made everyone dumb especially Bud Adams.

David Kilngler....one of the original spread QB's out of Houston who fooled everyone with his numbers (not like Andre Ware who actually did have NFL measurables but, sadly, was drafted by the Detroit Lions).

I am sure there are others.

But..for the most part you can be guaranteed that any QB who survives the NFL vetting process (film, combine, private workouts, etc...) and still gets picked in the top 10 has all the physical tools to play the position.

Yes, including Jake Locker.

your mistake is in assuming I'm only referring to physical tools.

Jake Locker did not have the tools to make It as an NFL QB.  And by tools I mean the entire skillset necessary to succeed as a starting NFL QB.  Vince Young didn't either, but he had a better chance of succeeding than Locker.  Sorry.

I watched Mariota at Oregon quite a bit and I'm not surprised at all. To be able to run a fast paced offense as well as he did, you have to have an understanding of the basics.  I just hope people are patient and understand the difficulties in becoming an elite QB in the NFL.  There are very, very few.  Just because he's not winning a super bowl the first 5 years does not mean he's a bust.

I think one thing being lost in all of the Mariota vs Mett debate is this:

Can you imagine how on edge most our fanbase would be right now had we decided to stick with Mett (and say draft Williams) and everything was still playing out exactly the same.  Mett is showing well in preseason but so was Marcus on another team.   It would be an awkward feeling just waiting/praying that Zach stayed the course and Mariota didn't blossom into what all early indications are showing he will be.  We talked about it some leading up to the draft, and it's way too early to crown anyone, but even as well as Mett's looked during preseason, I'd be grinding my teeth after all the positives Mariota's displayed so far.

If everything played out exactly the same so far except that Williams was here instead of Mariota, I would be perfectly happy.  Mett is taking off from his experience last year and is looking really sharp, and Williams looks like a beast.

"Sorry" does not win you the point.

Jake Locker had all the arm strength, mobility, size and toughness to make it in the NFL and under other conditions would have. If he had come out as a junior he was likely  the #1 pick in the draft because of his off the charts physical measurables.

We will never know what would have become of Jake had he ever been healthy and not had to endure the circus around him which included a new coordinator every year. We do know that we saw him flash and play well at times before yet another injury would send him to the bench. You probably missed those games and we both know this.

I know one damn thing, if he is drafted by Fisher and Jeff lets him run around and play Jake Ball he''s probably a legend by now as per the Steve McNair story.

Dammit CTF ... everytime you start to make sense you do this ...

Is this sarcasm?

As much as I didn't want him drafted, I knew it was very likely the kid would good. He just has so many tools and his personality is on point. I still believe the questions about Oregon's system/pace were valid, it just so happens that MM is a guy that can run any system rather than be the product of one. Would've been happy with Mett+Williams but Mariota is looking like the right call. Both he and Mett could crash and burn tomorrow but right now we're in a great place. We actually looked like an NFL team yesterday; that's a huge deal to me.

I liked Mariota's feet & delivery.  Loved the delivery!  but I had no idea how smart the guy was on the field and executing progressions.  I am completely blown away so far on his acumen and execution and especially the accuracy.  Call me a homer, but I'm not sure I ever seen anything like it so early.  Looking forward to the continued development and hope the lessons won't be too painful.

and btw, nobody is talking about his running ability.  no one -- national, local,... it's not even in the convo.  So when he goes for 30yds during the season on a busted play everyone will have to recall that -- oh yeah, he can hurt you that way, too.  nice.

Pretty apparent by Lockers actions, he himself didn't think he could be a solid NFL QB.

Hence why he's wiping sweat off equipment  and checking membership ID's at the entrance of his dozen membership gym.

LOL I could totally see him doing that. He has ultra positive/annoying, meathead personal trainer written ALL over him.
