They won the championship a few years later. I'd like to see how many fans will stay on during this period of suckiness. Pretty obvious that they will suck for a few more years (bad FO/ownership). The max salary spot is set at a certain number (think it is something like 29.6 million) the only team that will be able to offer Durant (for example) more is OKC because they retain his Bird rights other than that every team offers the same amount assuming they have cap space. Their cap space can be used to overpay other players though. Again, what is the point of playing for the Lakers if they are not good currently? Shit look at Aldridge, he already has a home in LA but turned down the Lakers because he didn't think they could win and thought their ownership and FO is a damn mess. Their brand image has been absolutely destroyed and are not a hot FA commodity just because people want to play for them. If they want to live in CA there are what seems to be half a dozen better options in that single area, let alone if you want to live on the west coast you can add 20 more options than that on the list of "teams that would be better to play for". Nobody wants to go to a team as a FA in hopes to turn it around when there is very little promise of them even being better than the competition and no other reason besides the dwindling brand image. Those teams you mentioned might fall back but that doesn't mean the Lakers will be the ones to make the jump. As they are currently constructed they have very little talent. Minnesota, Denver, Sacramento all have more talent than the Lakers do. And I wouldn't be surprised if the Rockets contend for a conference title in a few years as well. And Durant? Even if he did go to the Lakers it would not make them an instant contender, as one man can't do it all. Nor can he carry a team like Lebron can. Jordan had his Pippen, while Durant has his Westbrook, but the similarities end there. Lakers will lose their pick to the Sixers either this year or next. I believe next year is unprotected. So they don't have an important rebuilding pick, and they messed up picking Russell when they should have taken Okafor (and probably a few others). The Lakers have sent D'Angelo Russell and Julius Randle to the bench. It's bad enough that Scott doesn't even let Russell finish the games but now he isn't even starting. They are a rebuilding team. Play the young players, Byron. Oh and Kobe Bryant is currently shooting 30.6% and 21.9% on threes. The MLB average leader last year was Miguel Cabrera of DET at .338. The characters and egos on the team the past decade in a half have just been incredible where there is no benefit of the doubt with that franchise. When Brady and BB retires the Pats will get a lot more shit talking than the Lakers can imagine. It's no different than Miami too, people loved talking shit about their "demise".
