So who's the Qb if Mett gets hurt (he's been injured 2 consecutive seasons) I say draft either Winston/Mariota and let them compete against Mett.

If QB is the most important position on the team. Why wouldn't you hedge your bets to make sure that you have more than one prospect?

I said this at the beginning of February.

That would not be hedging.  Drafting a QB #2 would mean that he is THE QB for at least three years, probably 4 years, no matter how bad he is.  He would have to either have a career ending injury, or go on crime spree, to get anything less than 3 years.

Taking a QB in round 3 or later could entertain the scenario you painted in the quote above.

I don't think so.  The Seahawks signed Matt Flynn to a big free agent deal then started Russell Wilson. They said to hell with conventional thought and started Wilson.

Whiz has never been hesitant to pull a QB.  If MM is playing poorly and the team is still losing by the middle of year 2, then Mett will play.  The team won't go 3 full years with a bust at QB. In addition, there are very few QBs on any team that play 16 games.  Mett will be under contract for 3 more seasons.  Odds are he will get some more playing time even if MM is drafted.

.@JasonPhilCole listed the Redskins, Jets, Bears, Rams, Cleveland, Philadelphia & Philadelphia are all in the bidding for Mariota w/ TEN.

I can't believe I'm saying this since I'm so pro-Mettenberger but I'm starting to get worried here. Is Mariota this great a QB prospect that a half a dozen teams are in a bidding war for him? Is he just too good to pass up?

Mettenberger wont even be the back-up next year if Mariota is drafted.  He will go from starter to 3rd string.  The team will put full QB coaching into Mariota, with no real development toward Mettenberger, making Whitehurst start the season then slip into #2 role when Mariota starts.

Call me crazy....but it's possible that the coaching staff's opinion might be based more on what they saw of him in regular season NFL games than  pre-draft evaluations that were made before he ever played a down in the NFL.

It cracks me up how much emphasis people place on a player's draft position after he's already in the NFL.   Once a player hits the field it doesn't make a damn bit of difference where he was drafted;  he's going to play the way he plays, regardless of whether he was a top-five pick or an undrafted free agent.

Talent scouting is a very inexact science, and even the most successful evaluators misjudge players on a regular basis....wasting high picks on bad players while allowing great players to slip to the later rounds.  It's hardly a stretch to think that Mettenberger could end up being another diamond in the rough, and a much better player in the NFL than any of his pre-draft scouting reports suggested.

CBJ will be cut if MM is drafted. They will continue to develop Mett as the #2. He's too valuable of an asset to discard.

Exactly. I think the book being closed on Mett deal if we draft MM is overdone. Mett's under contract for 3 more years, that's a very long time & a lot of things can happen.

I don't know why so many people think he's going to shrivel up & die if he's not the starter. Every year backups come out of nowhere & play well, there's been countless guys who weren't starters for years & performed well when named the starter. Cousins & Foles looked totally fine when they took over. Aaron Rodgers anybody?

This sentiment that he's going to regress into a shell of himself if he backs up for a year or two makes no sense. What about all these kids that are drafted & sit for a year, do they fall apart?

It is relevant on how much chance they get.

Easy example: Perhaps it is Titans fan bias, but I think most would conclude that Mettenberger looked better than Bortles last year.  Yet if the Titans draft Mariota, no one would be shocked and most, throughout the NFL, would conclude that it was a good, rational pick, but if the Jaguars picked Mariota at #3, there would be opinion after opinion describing the pick as crazy and shocking, and remark after remark questioning the Jaguars taking back to back QBs early.    What is difference? Where they were drafted.  Why? Because everyone expects an early pick to get much more chance than one taken in 6th round.

Wait ... why not just keep CBJ at third string. Where is he going?
