McNulty on our QBs

Come on guys, we all know the deal. Everything he said about Locker is fluff, and everything he says about Mettenberger is gospel. In fact if you read between the lines he is saying Locker sucks and needs to be gone and Mettenberger will break all the rookie passing records.

Tyler Wilson is as good as gone. He's the equivalent of a UDFA camp arm. Ruston said at one point last year that Loggains and Munch really liked him and that's why they went out and got him.

Probably but if he plays well and Mett isn't healthy and Locker plays well, they could easily decide to keep both by putting Mett on IR and letting the competition continue next year. There's not much downside to it.

Yeah, that's not going to happen.

Reading about the changes Wiz made for Rivers when he took over, and the things we've read and heard here, this offensive systems requires the QB to make protection calls and gives them more control over checks, reading the defense pre snap, etc. Not sure if that's for better or worse in Locker's case because after Palmer, Munch really baby sat Locker and basically gave him the VY treatment as far as having control and having to go through multiple progressions.

Even Palmer's offense only required the QB to read one side of the field, although his option routes were overly complex.

One of the things McNulty was impressed with then and now is Mettenberger's advanced background. Mettenberger worked last year in a pro-style system under LSU offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, a longtime NFL coordinator.

"He ran a real pro offense and he had to do a lot of things with the protection and run checks, and reading the coverage," McNulty said....

Thats good in my opinion because a lot of college QB's from systems in college where they don't really ask you to do much of anything other than go left to right or right to left, and you don't account for blitzers. Those QB's have to start from scratch like Mcnulty pointed out. Its good that Mettenberger already has some experience in a pro style offense.

"Luckily with Zach coming in here from LSU and Cam Cameron, he's been asked to do a lot, whether it's pressure on the quarterback, getting the team in and out of the right place, and making legitimate reads and throws. … He's run the team, whether it's been the no-huddle or whatever, and he's run it without any real hiccups."

Thats something else that will bode well for Mettenberger is that he learns quick and runs things without any real issues.

"He's shown a great work ethic," McNulty said. "He's in here at 5:30 every morning and he's here late, with someone on his own or watching tape. He asks really good questions and he hasn't really had any mental busts. And obviously, as far as arm-talent, he probably had the best arm in the draft."

Another thing i'm very impressed with is Mettenberger is showing that he is going to do whatever it takes to learn more and get better even if it takes most of the day/night to do it.He has got a really good arm and good accuracy as well.

Bottom line is Mettenberger is showing all the signs of a QB that will do whatever it takes to get better day in and day out. I'm impressed.

There's obviously no chance it will happen but I just wish we'd cut Whitehurst. As long a shot as Wilson may be we're so desperate for a QB Id rather keep the younger guy to increase our odds.

I think Wilson got a raw deal in Oakland last year & Im curious to see how he looks.

Then again he'd probably be safe on the practice squad.

Not happening. The downside is not getting our rookie QB playing time if Jake goes down.

Not exactly a huge downside since if Wilson played well, he'd get playing time. And in that scenario Mett isn't healthy in camp and you don't know yet if he is good enough to merit playing time.

And just to reiterate, I didn't say it'd happen. I said it's unlikely but it is very possible.
