If you think he's a top 5 guy, then extend him which would keep the cap hit way under 11.8M.

Because he will probably get $9 million per year long term, so paying him an extra $2 million for one year makes more sense since it is prudent to make sure he can either maintain his level of play or improve. It also gives us leverage in negotiations because he will have to choose between a potentially reasonable long term deal with us or risking injury or a dropoff in play from last season. He could hold out and not sign, but that would be idiotic.

Gonna have to disagree with the Levitre signing being a failure

Let's no pretend that Seattle didn't make a splash in the offseason as well.  First of all, they traded multiple picks and signed Percy Harvin to a monster contract (6 years $67M and $12 Mil signing b

It reduced the amount of cap space rolled over. And if we didn't use the space this year, then it can roll over to 2015, etc. etc.

isn't there a limit to how much rolls over? And are we hurting for cap this year?

I'm not aware of any limit on the rollover.  Managing the cap is a multi-year process.  When team succeed and win, the player who do well expect to get paid.  That's how teams get broken up. The titans aren't at that stage yet, but if they get there, then they will all the cap space they can muster.

You said:  If they have the space what's the harm?

I interpret that as an argument about cap space.  The harm is about reducing the rollover.  If you can't use it effectively this year, then there will be a use for it next year.

Not using the 11 mill and rolling it over is the exact same as using it then having his one year tag come free in 2015. The 11 mill is available both ways

Assume the cap is 140M next year as is being projected.  If you roll it over, then you are at 151M in 2015.  If you tag him and use the 11M this year, then you are at 140M in 2015.

And BTW, I'm not advocating rolling over the entire 11.8M.  I'm just saying that the space can be rolled over and is cumulative.  In 2015, Casey is up, Morgan is a RFA and if Locker plays well this year, then you have to deal with him.

A big part of my opinion is based on the status of the team as a contender.  The Titans, IMO, aren't a SB contender in 2014.  They are a potential playoff contender.  If  they were in position like the 49ers/Broncos and ready to make a SB shot, then I'd say keep Verner.  But they aren't.  So conserve your cap space, continue to build the overall roster and keep as much space as possible until you really need it.

If it were me, I'd let Verner walk, sign a cheaper vet and extend Casey.

  • 1 year later...

It's early but check out this year's big free agent moves.

Suh to the Fins... invisible non factor.(Haynesworth part 2?)

Murray to the Eagles, comical

Maxwell to the Eagles, looks terrible

Although these aren't really free agency signings McCoy has done nothing for the Bills and Graham hasn't done much for Seattle.

Juluis Thomas, nothing although injured

Vince Wilfork? Haven't heard a peep

Look at two former Titans that fit into my free agent's you want to look at list... 30+ yr old vets fighting for their NFL careers.

Nate Washington: 32 years old at the end of the line. Washington signed for the league minimum and with the league veteran discount is actually only counting 613K. Guys with 10+ years don't count their full salaries if their paid the league minimum. He's on pace for 70 catches and 1100 yards

Chris "Thug" Johnson: Having spared the league to death for several years now and being shot in some thug activity he finally signs with the Cards and is playing harder than he has in years while making the league and only counting 870K.

You have to build through the draft and sign bargain basement free agents for cheap money.
