SpaceX nailed the landing tonight. They successfully launched a mission and landed stage 1 of the rocket safely. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-switch/wp/2015/12/21/elon-musks-spacex-pul

I have no reason to create a new thread for this, I just think it's cool...

The engineers that were on the Apollo program are my heros.  We're talking total hero worship.

It’s amazing what progress SpaceX has made. Today they launched Elon Musk's Tesla Roadster to Mars successfully (so far) on their newest, highest capacity rocket and even managed to both boosters safely (though not the rest of stage 1). It really is a scientific marvel.

Watching both of the rockets come back and pull off that synchronized landing was awesome...

The future is now.

What has been NASA's biggest problem in that it doesn't seem to be able or willing to do these kinds of things anymore? Too many accidents, like the Columbia disaster? Ineffective/inefficient management of resources? Other beauracratic non-sense?

The yanked feed was strange.  At work they got the feed running on a projector in the concourse.  About 20-30 colleagues were watching and cheering.  We're all waiting for the grand finale on the drone ship.  Then it abruptly cuts to two uncomfortable announcers, and an engineer comes in and talks about how it was a great success.  Everyone then wanders off confused.
