JLocker10
http://ten.247sports.com/Article/Jared-Cook-eager-to-his-skills-as-full-time-starting-tight-end-34761 Real excited to see him this season He's going to make our former coaching staff look real stupid for not finding ways to use him earlier This quote is very telling: It was very frustrating. You think you've got some hope. They always tell you that they're going to have plays designed for you and that you're gonna play,” Cook said. “But it's really kind of the opposite end of the spectrum. They kind of had their guys that they worry about, and it's kind of hard to fit you in, which is understandable. “I mean, my rookie year I had Bo, Alge (Crumpler) and Craig (Stevens) in front of me, so my opportunity for playing time was pretty much limited to special teams. But now, it's kind of clear skies. It's clear for me to go and let the offense be my playground and go out and play ball.”
Guest
Yes, that is very telling. As much as I will always respect and admire Fisher, it was apparent that he didn't always let the best players on the field due to loyalty (and trust) to veteran performers. Hopefully, he will end up breaking out under Munch and the bunch.
Jamalisms
Alge the experienced professional makes sense. The other two were not the athlete he is, and there certainly could have been more effort made to get him on the field despite the fact that he is one cookie short of a batch. nine
Apparently Cook didn't get the memo about what a great playcaller Heimerdinger was. Somebody show him the gamefilms. On second thought......maybe we should just send the memo instead.
NashvilleNinja
It infuriates me, but then at the same time it's actually a relief. Had they done a little more with Cook he may have helped them win a couple more games, possibly games that would've allowed them to still be here. Thank God for total ineptitude and breakdowns. Can I get shout of amen up in here?!?
HOTT
Could there just be the slightest chance that Cook's lack of playing time rests mainly in him not being able to learn the play book? Oh---that's right it's been all the coaches fault. I should have known.
OILERMAN
Cook always looks great in training camp. I wanna see him play in the base offense in the regular season and produce.
nine
As I recall, Cook admitted to having trouble with the playbook in his rookie season....but I don't recall any mention of it last year. Heimerdinger himself admitted on several occasions that they'd put plays and packages for Cook in the gameplan for each week....but as Dinger put it, "It just never felt like the right time", "We just never got around to them", or "Things just got away from us". What that tells me is that Dinger had good ideas and could design some great plays...but when the rubber hit the road on gameday, he was reluctant to push the envelope, choosing instead to stay in his comfort zone with the same bread-and-butter-type plays week after week. A play only works if you call it....and Dinger himself admitted that in far too many cases, they simply weren't calling Cook's number. When he finally started seeing opportunies later in the season, he showed himself to be a relatively consistent and reliable target. Hopefully the new regime recognizes Cook's strengths and will do their best to utilize them, rather than asking him to perform in a capacity that exposes his weaknesses. Number9
It will be interesting to see "can't learn the playbook Cook" in the WCO. I never bought that the Titans playbook was that complicated.
Nash
Nine , correct me if I'm mistaken, but didn't Dinger's system have lots of adjustments during the play where as the WCO has all of the adjustments before the play based on coverage, protections, and audibles?? HOTT
A new broom sweeps clean. In the eyes of some, anything Cook does on a positive note will be strictly the accomplishment of the new staff. Could it be though that the "special packages" were simply a hand full of plays that were spoon fed to him because he wasn't grasping the rest of the offense? Without the benfit of being an insider I would guess yes. I hope he tears up the league as he appears to have special and unique talents that make it entirely possible. I think he acquisition was a good one, but I'm not ready to concede that he isn't burning up the league because of the previous staff. In fact, he's probably just about where you would expect a 3rd year TE/WR to be as a pass receiver. He'll probably never even be an adequate blocker though. Omar
I remember Wyatt saying in the SD game last year that Cook had a nice catch on a route called especially for him, then in the second half they called the same route and he stayed in to block resulting in a sack on third down, and he was benched after that. What happens when he goes out for a pass on a play he is suppossed to be in blocking? He has to know the playbook before he can play...I mean damn if it is a specific play for him and he can't remember it that is bad.
reo
I'm not putting Cook's lack of playing time solely on the shoulders of the coaches (shocking, i know). When you've got an idiot for a QB that you don't think can hit the seam routes and such, you mostly stick to simple stuff w/ big formations and play action... and that's not what Cook is good at. Hopefully w/ Hasselbeck, they can really open it up some.
Jamalisms
I did say that Cookie is one himself short of a batch. I think a lot of people admit he is lacking in the brain dept... just that more effort could have been made with the last regime to get athletes on the field and producing.
