OzTitan
Even if all that's true though, it still doesn't change the fact the Te'o had to lie at some point about meeting her. Which is easily explainable IMO by the possibility he was simply embarrassed about it being an online relationship and wanted it to seem normal. He only said all this after 'her' death right? When he would have thought it was going to be impossible to disprove? I mean if it were real eventually it may come out it was an online relationship, but that's not a big deal in itself and doesn't mean he wouldn't have met her in person, so I could see him lying about that when he thought it was a harmless lie to cover up a potential embarrassment. Still all adds up the cleanest that he was tricked IMO. Some of you guys are overrated the effort required to string something like this along. The length of time is irrelevant - if anything over time it would just get easier.

OzTitan
LOL@ people thinking he was suckered Do you really believe he was behind this whole thing? It just seems so unlikely. I think it's probable he lied about the nature of the relationship to cover up the embarrassment of being a pro athlete who is in love with a girl who he only knows online (not unusual for this to happen btw, it's pretty common on the net), and he probably also did play into the story for the attention it brought him possibly even exaggerating how significant a relationship it was, but these thing can be out there without requiring him to be the mastermind behind the scam. I feel people are simply ignoring some facts and obvious signs that make this very unlikely for the sheer lulz and excitement of a scandal. Maybe he wasn't entirely suckered into being heart broken, but IMO he was definitely suckered into believing this person was real and is being exposed now because of it. Alcibiades
We have to assume that he really didn't ever see her over that long of a relationship? And then he just lied to cover up the fact that he didn't see her, Oz? Ok....I'm trying to buy into this version. So did he lie about talking to her family too? Or was that all email and such as well, and the only lie was that it was over the phone? Also, even if it were online only, they still would have talked on the phone. There is NO reason not to. I'll assume that you really do live in Australia, and that perhaps cell phone plans are different there. Here in the U.S. calling someone on a cell phone doesn't cost you anything. There's absolutely no reason not to do it. So we have to assume that a woman pretended to be his girlfriend every time he called...which would have been quite often. It just stretches credulity to think that someone would do that for so long. And why did he still talk as though she were real after he allegedly knew it was a scam? there are reports showing that this happened. He says he found out December 6th, but he was still talking about his "dead girlfriend" on December 8th. Why? I just can't believe it. I get that you think it's the simplest explanation, but I don't. There are too many problems.

Any guy that had be tricked in this type of situation would lie. No doubt about it. It would be extremely embarrassing.

mctitan53
Would they agree to go on TV and discuss it and have a pep rally in support of their dead fake girlfriend while calling her the love of their life? I don't think he knew until December 6th, like Notre Dame pointed out. But at that point, the media was still making a big deal of it, so Manti got caught up in either having to lie and play along so that people wouldn't find out, or come clean and face the embarrassment. If he came clean, people would have questioned how naive or smart he is. Hindsight is 20/20, but obviously that situation would have been a lot better than the one that played out. Everyone is going to have their opinion about this whole thing. Some will try to make it out to be as bad as it possibly can be (which more often than not isn't the case). But of all the possibly scenarios, I believe this.
reo
As I said before, we'll probably never know. He'll probably get away w/ claiming he was duped. I'd be curious to hear what the guy that made the account has to say and if they really knew each other before hand.
Jamalisms
If we're trying to believe his story, it includes getting called by her number and then talking to the voice he recognized and trying to look into it a bit before then going to the school and hiring Ace Ventura. He didn't believe/really know as of Dec 6th, right?

reo
That's kind of what I figured the guy would say. The question would be if he's protecting his friend/cohort that's about to go to the NFL and make tons of money or if he's telling the truth. There's no telling. It's kind of like Lance Armstrong on doping. When he said no, you don't really know if he's telling the truth or not. It's only if he says yes that we really get anything out of it (and he did say it btw).
