Settling the QB Carousel

Settling the Quarterback Carousel

In an offseason of uncertainty, coaching changes and rookie quarterbacks there has been a great deal of speculation into where a number of free agent and trade viable quarterbacks may land. While anything could happen and situations are still fluid, here's a list of some quarterbacks who could find themselves with a new home next season:

Kevin Kolb - Seattle Seahawks

Although Kolb has been widely linked to the Arizona Cardinals there are a number of reasons to believe that he's a better fit on a different NFC West team. First, Kolb is far from a sure thing and Whisenhunt is almost certainly on a fairly hot seat. Can Whisenhunt ride out the up and downs of a young and still developing quarterback? Pete Carroll has far more job security, especially after an unlikely playoff appearance.

Additionally, Kolb's pure WCO skillset fits what Seattle reportedly wants to do and is a better fit offensively than in Arizona. The Seahawks are rebuilding under a new coach and will need to add a young quarterback within the next year. The NFC West is the NFL's weakest division and Kolb offers not only the potential to win in the short term, but the potential to build around a young nucleus for the future.

Kyle Orton - Arizona Cardinals

The Denver Broncos need to know what they have in Tim Tebow and Orton only has a year remaining on his contract. Even though John Fox values veteran quarterbacks, he has a young first round pick on the roster, plenty of job security and a few veteran quarterbacks on the market as insurance. Whisenhunt needs to starting winning soon and doesn't have the same security to take his lumps with a young quarterback. Orton is a known quantity and can be a winning quarterback if he has the right supporting cast.

If Whisenhunt can muster a quality rushing attack with Williams and Wells, Orton should be able to put up a proficient passing offense with Fitzgerald. At this point Orton is not only a safer choice, but a better deep passer and offensive fit for the Cardinals. Also consider that the Cardinals may be unlikely to offer up a first round pick for any quarterback when there's uncertainty at the coaching position. The current coach will want an impact player next season in the first round and a new coach will want their system and their guys. If the Cardinals pull the trigger, they find themselves a season late and a pick short if things don't work out well.

Donovan McNabb - Miami Dolphins

Washington was a disaster for McNabb and it seems like the situation is beyond repair. The contract situation for McNabb is also a disaster so it's highly likely Donovan will have a great deal of control as to where he goes. Don't expect him to be a backup to a young Jake Locker or Christian Ponder. Look for the Miami Dolphins and McNabb to have a marriage of convenience and desperation. Despite his extension, Sparano knows that his time is short if he doesn't start winning soon and there's certainly a lack of trust between him and the inconsistent Henne. McNabb considers himself a starting quarterback and will want assurances that he'll have the best chance of starting. Miami is probably that place.

Sparano doesn't have much to lose by installing McNabb as his starter. He won't cost much and if things go poorly he can go always hand the job back to Henne who needs every opportunity he can get to stay in the league. It may be easy for Sparano to write off McNabb's time with the Redskins given the tension between him and Kyle/Mike Shanahan. He's also unlikely to trust his career to Henne who nearly put him on the street for Jon Harbaugh. Additionally, McNabb fits their system as a deep ball thrower and is more likely to find a way to connect with Brandon Marshall.

Vince Young - Philadelphia Eagles

If Andy Reid proved anything last season it's that he can rehabilitate a quarterback's career. It's unlikely that Young will find himself a starting position on any team and the Eagles will probably want a mobile backup for Vick who can take Kolb's position. That makes Philadelphia the ideal landing place for a young but talented quarterback on the outs. Reid is a likable coach who has the trust and control of his team. With lesser expectations, Young and Reid should get along well and maybe develop the relationship that Fisher and Young never had.

Matt Hasselbeck - Tennessee Titans

If the Seahawks acquire Kolb in a trade Tennessee automatically becomes the favorite place for Hasselbeck to land for a variety of reasons. The Titans need a veteran quarterback to insulate and guide a young Jake Locker. Hasselbeck will be given the opportunity to start on a good team with solid supporting cast until Locker manages to win the job. Hasselbeck has a number of ties to the Titans front office (Reinfeldt, Webster, Palmer, Dawson), a relationship with former Washington Husky and Titans first round pick Jake Locker and a reported interest in "paying it forward" for a young developing quarterback.

Additionally, new offensive coordinator Chris Palmer anticipates adding a much quicker passing game to the Titans offense which will fit Hasselbeck's previous experience in a West Coast offense. Expect the Titans to offer a competitive, multi-year contract for the former Seahawks quarterback.

Marc Bulger - Minnesota Vikings

Even though Christian Ponder may have been a reach in the first round, there's no doubt that he was one of the most pro-ready quarterbacks in the draft. Additionally, new head coach Leslie Frazier has been quite clear that he wants a youth movement in Minnesota. For these reasons, it's unlikely that the Vikings will pursue McNabb, Orton or any other quarterback with expectations of being a one to two year starter. Many teams are uncertain whether Bulger could ever be a starter in the league again after his time in St. Louis but he represents an attractive option as a backup quarterback and potential short term starter.

There's the possibility that Bulger could find himself in Cincinnati as a bridge quarterback to rookie Andy Dalton, but the Bengals have been much more open publicly to Dalton starting week one than the Vikings have with Ponder. Jay Gruden seems quite enamored with Dalton and it's more probable that Bulger finds himself with the Vikings.

I can't call any of these speculations out of the question. All the landing spots you mentioned make sense, except maybe for the McNabb one, Minny makes more sense to me ... but nice job.

It was difficult to try and find a place for McNabb. Personally, I can't see him going to Minnesota due to the fact that he will most likely demand to be the starting QB. (His contract is untradeable, so he'll be cut). Miami is the only arguably QB needy place (with no rookie in the wings) that would consider an older vet through FA.

If the Vikings were to consider it, I think Minnesota would be his landing place with Bulger going to the Bengals. That's probably a realistic scenario if the Vikings were open to McNabb.

Does Reid like to develop relationships with QBs with inflated egos and no work ethic? If he does your right, maybe this relationship will blossom!

Andy Reid would put up with VY's antics for about 10 mins before he put VY's ass on the bus home.

VY is so far from being the type of mobile QB Vick is it's not even funny. I seriously doubt the idiot could learn Reid's pass happy offense and he'd be turnover machine throwing that many passes per game. Of course this is assuming the Eagles would want VY setting foot in their facility.

He'd be bringing him in as a #2 QB so the dynamics/expectations are clearly different. You're acting like he'd be starting the entire season. If Young even remotely learns a lesson after getting cut he's definitely talented enough to do spot duty as a back up quarterback.

Besides I didn't say he'd have long term success there, just that I expect him to get signed there. Whether he makes it out of camp is anyone's guess.

It wouldn't surpise me if Young goes unsigned to start the year. Fisher has an incredible reputation around the NFL and when a guy like Dungy, who actively counsels troubled youth and works with men in prison says he wouldn't touch a guy who couldn't play for Fisher, that should tell you something. I suspect the issues with VY go way deeper than any of us know.

The hell I am, I'm acting like I don't expect Reid to touch VY. The problem with your analysis was it suggested the problem was Fisher didn't develop a relationship with VY to help him. That's 100% dead wrong and a guy like Reid will be far less willing to put up with VY. The last time we heard VY he was saying he was a franchise QB and twitting LeBron talking like he was on that level, the last time we saw him he looked fat as hell. The guy is a loser and too lazy to succeed in the league.

Man you hate VY. Let it go and PLEASE don't make him the focus of this thread as you do so many others. It's about FA QBs, lets keep it that way.

Hopefully they will sign Hasselbeck now that KC is out of the picture, unless Kerry pulls a Brett Favre or something (it could happen). But even though he will want a multi-year deal, I hope it will be one that they can get out of relatively easily after this year cause the only use for him I see beyond 2011 is as Locker's backup.

He turns 36 in a couple of months and he's been horrible since '08. Even if Hasselbeck is the starter, I doubt he will be able to stay healthy for an entire season. So whether or not he plays well, it's only a matter of time until his bad back forces him to the sideline and Locker takes over as the starter (at least temporarily).

What I hate worse than VY is excuses made for VY....The old maybe Reid can fix VY since Fisher wasn't nice to him routine. VY has one problem, VY. No one else.

Well done Cyrus, but I have to disagree with your assessment on Minnesota. Regardless of Frazier’s desire to go younger, that team is built to win it ALL right now. Their offensive skill players are in their prime, and Jared Allen and Hutchinson are not getting any younger and cost them dearly. They just need a QB to come in and pull the trigger, not grow into the position. This is fundamentally the same team that bent over backwards to get Favre to do just that. Accordingly, I think Minny & Hassleback make a lot sense for both the team and player - including the tutelage of another 1st round QB
