OILERMAN
I believe Manning was always going to pick the Bronco's and just used the Titans as leverage for more money from the Bronco's.
Jonboy
“@adbrandt: Certain Peyton could have used leverage to take on less risk in contract. A rare instance where "it's not about the money" rings true.”
Eighteen
I believe Manning was always going to pick the Bronco's and just used the Titans as leverage for more money from the Bronco's. Exactly. When Bud started running his mouth and said he'd pay Manning whatever he wants, of course he's going to use that to his advantage.
TitanJoe28
I guess the injury doesn't really create a scenario where Peyton was going to be paid a modest amount, when 4-5 teams are pursuing him in a desperate fashion. I am surprised he didn't get more. And if Manning had any modicum of class, he would have politely declined when offered the retired jersey number of Frank Tripucka. Here's to hoping his legacy is someday treated with the same level of courtesy. The ONLY reason, and I do mean ONLY, Tripucka got his number retired is because he was their first QB of the modern era. He sucked. His number being retired is a joke. pat
I told my Denver friends last year during Tebowmania they were 3-5 years out of contention for a SB. Signing Peyton is the best way to get rid of Tebow but still is overcompensation. Peyton can make them win but he's going to break down physically in 2-3 years. His number being retired is a joke. I have no idea how good Tripucka was, but they did retire his jersey, so that should be respected. I recall that when Joe Montana was traded to Kansas City, the #16 he had always worn had been retired to honor Len Dawson. Montana wore #19. Manning should have done something similar. Oiler FANatic
Thank goodness he's not here, it would have been a disaster. It was a terrible plan from the start and Manning was obviously looking to play for more than 2-3 years. Agreed 100%. If you take the $96M earmarked for him, they still have $61M left to spend over the next 5 years after signing Wimbley.
NashvilleNinja
Don't confuse extreme interest with the intrique and wanting your team to "win" the competition for signing him, with actively wanting him. I saw a lot of people say they were warming to the idea or coming around or, etc. I started to thaw a tad, but I'd hoped it would have been for a reasonable deal and with the thought in mind of it being a pretty quick signing. But with how everything unfolded, with us losing out on one of a couple kick ass centers, and Mario Williams (who I'd still want instead of Wimbley, even at MW's cost or close to it)... the part of me that thawed quickly froze back up. pamo9
http://sportsillustr...html?xid=cnnbin Manning says telling Munch he wasn't coming was tough. Also says he never got a "for life" deal from us either.
