It really is staggering how bad the WR's Mariota's played with since drafted.

2015- his top 3 were Wright, DGB, and Douglas. All out of the league.

2016-Rishard, Tajae, Wright. Rishard good, the other 2 you know. Plus Andre Johnson played over Rishard the first 6 weeks or so

2017-Rishard, Decker, Davis. Decker immediately cut by Pats, nobody else wants. Davis was basically worthless because of the injury & hurt the team until the last few weeks, where he or healthy & Marcus improved greately.

Still cant understand how we took no receivers in free agency. Look at the Ravens n how their offense executed n realize that we could have had any one of those guys in their wr core but passed them up for a couple of young wrs who havent done or proved shit yet. Pisses me off.

Any resident experts want to break 'em down?

I'm not an offensive expert by any means but look at sack 9, the 2 WR's on the bottom of the screen, after one of the receivers motioned into the slot from the other side. Did one of them run the wrong route? The outside guy does a curl,  the slot does an out & runs right into the outside guys space. Something clearly went wrong here. I have a feeling the outside guy was supposed to run the curl much deeper, maybe 10 more yards or so downfield. The curl is a good route to stress a defender to cover that or a shallower route in the same area. In this case they basically wound up a few yards fcrom each other with 2 defenders right next to them.

In any event it didn't effect anything. You can tell Marcus looked to the other side first so his primary was there. Those guys were blanketed & he was sacked as he started to look to his left. But it makes me wonder how many mistakes were made that we may not even notice.

Really?  You can't figure it out?  Probably because we used the #5 pick in the draft on our #1 and expected to have Matthews as our #2.  We had Taylor and Sharpe as two young but capable guys at 3 and 4.  Yea, turned out we lost Matthews.  Were they supposed to have a crystal ball?  I still say the WRs are not the problem people make them out to be.  We lack some experience but I think the talent is adequate.

There was a lot of bad luck involved. There's not much you can do when you lose Walker after a half of football & Matthews pulls his shit.

But I disagree that the WR's aren't that big a problem. I think it's huge.  Some of the drops since last year have been horrific. Also, when was the last time a WR bailed him out? Or not even bailed out but just went up top & made a big catch down the sideline? Fahey showed about 6-7 clips from 2016 showing Marcus throwing perfect back shoulder passes down the sideline & our guys totally botching them, whether jumping way too early, getting totally out positioned, just dropping it, etc.

I think Taylor might be close though. He's been very close on making some huge plays. But we need help there. Badly.

I look at it like this. We drafted corey #5 last year. The chargers came right after us n drafted mike williams. They already had keenan allen, tyrell williams, travis benjamin, melvin gordon and hunter henry. Didnt stop them from adding more weapons for rivers. You cant predict losing delanie walker i know that but there has been tweets put out there now about rishard makin complaints since way before he asked for his release this year so why put all your faith in him if hes already showing signs of diva wr tendencies. Then we release him n the thought should have been we need to bring in a seasoned vet wr to take his place until the young guys have shown they are ready to take that step. Instead we bring up practice squad guys. We could do better is all im saying.

Quote

Thielen leads the NFL in receptions (58), yards (712) and yards per game (118.7). He's on pace to catch 155 passes this season, shattering Marvin Harrison's 2002 single-season record of 143 catches.

Unlike Harrison, Thielen doesn't have Peyton Manning to work with. Instead, Thielen has been making the reputations of—and making lots of money for—his quarterbacks the last three seasons. And he's doing so for the low, low price of just $19.2 million over four years.

...

...helped then-Vikings QB Sam Bradford set a single-season completion percentage record that year.

...

Separated from Thielen (and Stefon Diggs, a fine multidimensional receiver in his own right), Bradford went back to completing four-yard passes on 3rd-and-16 until he was benched.

Case Keenum replaced Bradford in Minnesota and became the surprise star of 2017, throwing for 3,547 yards and 22 touchdowns. Thielen caught 91 passes for 1,276 yards, but his impact on Keenum and the Vikings went far beyond the usual go-to receiver role.

Analytics revealed that Keenum's breakout year was full of hot air. Football Outsiders determined that Keenum benefited from a league-high 15 deep completions on inaccurate throws—in other words, plays where the receiver saved his bacon. Fifteen big plays by receivers can work wonders for a quarterback's statistics and reputation. Keenum was largely a product of Thielen and his other surroundings.

...

Cousins is playing well. But like Keenum and Bradford, he's getting a catch or two per game from Thielen other quarterbacks could only hope for: that 3rd-and-13 dive against the Cardinals, a game-tying last-minute touchdown (save the needed two-point conversion) against the Packers, big plays to sustain drives and flip field position against the Eagles.

The Vikings might be 3-3 or 2-4 with a lesser receiver than Thielen. That would place Cousins under the microscope instead of in the end zone performing borrowed dance routines.

I watched MNF. There were throws by both QBs I though we're terrible, but the receivers went and got them. Beathard threw a short sideline route I thought we be stuffed. The guy sidestepped the defender and got 15 yards. Also got some PIs. Point is, none of this happens if you don't throw the ball. 11 sacks is awful and a lot of yards lost. We don't involve our receivers very much. We can't get better without them. Firsker made a great catch (and a good throw) and we never went back to him. This offense makes no sense.

Mariota is scared to let it loose. The offensive game plan and receivers aren't helping him, but he's also afraid to take risks and let it loose. Cosell said this as well. I don't think we win that game regardless, but it is a legitimate criticism of him. Maybe he doesn't wanna throw any more INTs.

He’s always had this problem at times but after the Steeler game last year he’s been pitiful not cutting loose.
