Could we regret passing on Lattimore?

It's about how these players project.  I personally believe Davis will have 2 1,000 yard seasons over his first 6 years like Alshon, especially if they are able to put one of the best WRs in the league on the other side of him, which is what he had during those years.

Ryan isn't a shutdown CB, and Adoree may not become one, but we were #5 in yards allowed during the playoffs, and NO was one of the worst, so there's obviously more to a team than one CB.

The injury risk on Davis wasn't really a big concern.  His recent injury wasn't that serious although they rushed him back too early.  It isn't like he has had both knees operated on or something.  He had never really been hurt in 4 years of college until the end of his 4th season. His college career was actually a good indication he should be reliable.  There isn't a single reference to his reliability in his draft write up.

He was injured when he was drafted, and injured most of his rookie year.  JRob definitely rolled the dice, and I'm sure he was aware of the risk and considers the pick an aggressive move.

Ok, we can play that game.  So how has Garrett been so far?  Solomon Thomas?   Did either of those guys have outstanding rookie campaigns?  Anyone who has followed the draft and paid attention to the NFL know it is far from an exact science.  Then you add in the fact guys are rookies or not 100% healthy and .....

I've said this a million times.  Those early picks, and the guys who are supposed to be the best of their position groups rarely end up that way.  1st of all some guy drafted later will surprise and the guys drafted earlier will often disappoint.  How are Mike Williams and Ross doing?  Who was the best rookie WR last year?  A guy taken 30th in the 2nd round?

Thus it will be great if Davis can turn into a top 10 WR and he might still do that.  At the same time if he ends up being a top 20 guy he will still be a big contributor to the team and not a wasted pick.  If I had my way I'd almost always trade out of an early pick for extra picks because it increases the odds of getting viable players.  And yes, the Saints got darn lucky Lattimore was available and he turned out as good as he appears to be.  Either way we got a high quality CB anyway and hopefully a high quality wide out we know now was a huge need.

Garrett actually had a solid season. Don't know about Thomas, I don't pay attention to the 49ers at all anymore. I like what youre saying. I don't necessarily disagree with it. But I still don't think he was a good pick at 5. There was probably 20 other guys I would have rather had. Ill just leave it at that.

You must be one of those “instant gratification” type of people.

You must really have hated the pick. It is way too early to say he won’t live up to expectations. He was hurt most of the year and you could absolutely tell.

I def really hated that pick. Probably my most hated pick in awhile.

Are you not really taking into account the run on WRs right after we grabbed CD?

I just find it asinine to already label him as not worthy of the #5 pick when he was injured his rookie year and hasn’t really had a chance to shine just yet.

Im not going to change your mind, but I would implore you to adjust the standards by which you judge players.

But why would I care about a run on WRs? Its not like I think Ross or Williams are better. I simply thought that the WR class as a whole was terrible and nobody was worth a high pick. I did not know, nor at any time say, Schuster or Kupp were going to be what they were. I thought they were all not top 5 pick material. But there were a lot of other players I wanted that were good and we all knew they were pretty good at the time as well.

You might look at Davis and see something you like. I watched Davis and the only thing that popped into my head was Charles Rogers. They have the same build, come from similar programs, similar playing styles, similar hype, they even had similar rookie production. I'm not saying he is going to be as bad as Rogers ended up being. But I see enough to say he is not top 5 material.

Its just an opinion, and a prediction. And mine is that he will be a solid starter but will never be elite like his draft status would suggest.

And what are Juju and Kupp, exactly?  They are who I thought they'd be- solid, high-floor players.  They do not have the attributes that Davis has.  What they do have are excellent OCs and supporting casts which helped them to come along quickly.

Rogers is a horrible comparison.  Absolutely terrible.

How is Rogers a horrible comparison? He has the same build and the same attributes that Davis has. Back when he was entering the draft, they were calling him the next Randy Moss because of his play making abilities. You say that he is a horrible comparison because you have hindsight. Davis Playmaking abilities were hyped up in a similar way and his rookie season looked much like Rogers did. An injury with inconsistent play mixed with a few flashes of potential.

Rogers was a lanky track start. Nobody said Davis was anything like Moss.

Davis is less than 10lbs apart from Rogers. No they compared Rogers to Moss. Davis has drawn comparisons to Demaryius Thomas and Terrell Owens.

You've got it wrong.  It's normal to question spending the #5 pick on an injured player who rode the pine his whole rookie year.  That's 2nd round material.

It's fair to say "JRob swung for the fences and got a strike, but he's not out yet"

Every top prospect coming out of college draws comparisons to some elite player. Davis isn't unique in this so you're arguing a very irrelevant point. We get it, you don't like Davis and want us to agree with you. We don't. Get over it.

After year 1? Hardly. Maybe if CD doesn’t show improvement in year 2, but definitely not after year 1.

Question it all you want. I’ll keep my realistic expectations.

Rode the pine the whole year?  I can't argue with a statement that stupid.

Davis has NFL build and strength.  He's a little light on the scales, but he plays at least 10 pounds bigger.  I think Jordy Nelson/ Thomas are good comparisons.  I didn't see enough of T.O. , though his name immediately popped into my head while watching CD highlights for some reason.

It real easy to play the Brady card when discussing draft do over scenarios but that isn't really the case here. Those who wanted Lattimore last year have the right to bring up whether he should have been the pick or not. The guy is already a shutdown corner which you could argue is the rarest thing to find in today's NFL. I like Davis but Lattimore is an all pro after year one.
