I can't believe people actually believe Mularkey and his staff were good...

Today was not an indictment on the coaching staff. I'm neither a defender or opponent of the staff. I personally think they're good enough to get by with but ultimately replaceable. Today we saw what this team looks like without Mariota and exactly why his injury history is problematic. We blow that shitty Dolphins team out by 20+ with a healthy Marcus.

So, then follow this logic (that I don't even really she with) through. What credit does the staff deserve for anything if it's all Mariota?

Who were they missing and did you say the rest of the guys were bad in the preseason?

Mariota and Lewan to name 2.  That's easily their 2 most important players on the entire roster.

I think I overrated the Titans.  They're a middle of the road team that will probably finish in the 7-9 to 9-7 range.  The media and my own hope suckered me into thinking that they were an 11-5 type team that could even make a run in the playoffs.

Once Oman is all in on a coach he'd pretty much have to rape a kitten live on national television with 7 different camera angles with 6 of them in various zoomed in angles before he'd agree that he needs to be fired.

That would probably get Scotty's backing, tbh.

That's pretty much what I was looking for. Yes, many overrated this team dramatically. But the rest of the team isn't trash. They should still beat that joke of an opponent.

Last year was pretty flukey. People are turning on Mularkey because they thought 9 wins was the baseline and not a goal to repeat under less ideal scenario. Which means they weren't really paying attention last year.

This team isn't super talented but they're more talented than last year and they've got more talent than the results show, which is problematic. This team isn't good right now but they absolutely can get better. And I expect them to.

The whiplash on this forum is insane.

Are they really more talented?  I'm not sure they are.  They overachieved last year.  That I absolutely believe.  But where are they better this year than last?  Special teams?

Also, I think the Dolphins non/QB talent is pretty much on par with what the Titans have.  So the fact that the Titans were without their starting QB coupled with that it was Miami's first home game of the season in week 5 and this result should have shocked no one.

I wouldn't say it's all Mariota but it can't work without him. Most teams go to shit when the starter goes down so I don't see this as a unique indictment on Mularkey et al. Today played out exactly the way you'd expect. Miami has a guy known as one of the brightest offensive NFL minds as a HC and calling the plays yet their offense was barely betters than ours with their starter on the field.

Only truly superior coaching staffs like NE are usually able to keep the ship afloat when the starter is down. I've long argued that save for the Belichicks and Andy Reids of the world, coaches and coaching staffs are only really as good as their QB/ talent. All in all, I just don't think much separates 80% of NFL coaches from each other so focusing on them as the reason you suck or the reason you're great is wrong-headed. If we fire Mularkey, the most likely scenario is we hire yet another average to below average coaching staff that won't/can't scheme us to more wins. Hard to get all emotional about that.

The Dolphins and Titans were mirror images of each other today. Give either squad a legit QB and you're looking at a playoff team.

Im not sure they're much more talented than last year. Ryan is clearly an upgrade in the secondary, and you can probably say Adoree is as well. And Byard is making the second year jump. But Karl Klug, a very underrated nickel interior rusher for years now, clearly isn't the same after the Achilles. Murray isn't as good as last year. And Corey Davis, the main piece we added along with Ryan, basically hasn't played. And Conklin has regressed.

The coaching wasn’t the issue today, plain and simple. They had Cassel at QB. You can blame JRob for that if you’d like, but it was not a coaching decision to have MM get injured.

Jrob is to blame for Cassel but the coaches' hands are kind of dirty with Mariota getting injured on a run play

He is a mobile QB. That comes with the territory. This is one of the reasons I wasn’t a huge fan of drafting him originally.

That's the funny thing, if you were gonna blame someone today it would actually make more sense to blame Robinson. Which I wouldn't do either

I'm hesitant to place blame on J-ROb because I think he's done a good job at plugging holes in our team and there is only so much bleeding you can stop with 2 drafts. That said, we lack talent on the interior OL, secondary, interior DL, and could use 1 or 2 more corners. We could also use a new back-up QB but it feels silly to even mention it. I have faith that he'll address these positions this year but IMO until we address some of these issues, Marcus is going to have to play unreasonably perfect to keep us in games vs good teams.
