The Art of "Reaching"

Recommended Posts

It's amazing to me how so many fans and even some sports media heads, always seem to call the picks of Jon Robinson a reach.  Every draft, every year, there  are your projected "elite-can't miss player." Yet somehow we always find out it was some less publicized player who broke out into stardom and forged meaningful careers. Time will tell, but I think, JRob has decided to go with the players he projects to break out one day. People complained that we took Conklin too early and the same with Byard, Dodd, Johnson, and Sharpe. There were "higher impact players available" at the time. JRob was "reaching." One year later we have an All Pro tackle and nearly an entire draft class that is producing or providing meaningful depth.

This year seemed to be no different we could have had Corey Davis at 18 people said. There were much more "elite"CBs available Adoree Jackson, with better size. We supposedly reached for both of them based off what was on the board. I don't have to go through the rest of our picks, but it was the same pattern. It seems to me that Robinson has decided he doesn't care what other scouts, organizations or media heads think about players. He will take the players he feels has the lowest bust rate, have already produced in their prior programs and he will take them "against the grain" of the draft. I am all for this every year, although only time will tell if  this class will have as much as an impact as last years. It will also tell in  few years when these players finally adjust to the NFL game.

I wouldn't say Corey Davis was anywhere close to being the 5th best prospect in this draft... I think Robinson just had a better idea of forecasting when the WRs would go off the board. For that reason it's not a reach per se because you got the guy you wanted above all else which is most important.

Exactly, JRob read the draft beautifully and got his guy when the top 3 WRs were gone by pick 9. We would still be looking for a #1 WR

We really don't know, JRob really started the run on WRs. They all could have dropped had he gone CB first and there was a run on the deep CB class.

I think the chargers and Bengals were set on taking a WR. It wasn't worth the risk

I think it's funny that before the draft certain people said Davis might be there at 18 and even after all 3 WRs went before 9 and the guys like Allen, Howard and Lattimore fell these same people still said it was a "reach" or still clung to their own rankings, that were already proven wrong by the NFL. It's no longer speculation, we saw how the NFL rated the prospects.

Robinson picked the best players at positional needs, doesn't matter where they were ranked, only whether they develop

I think JRob has a draft board.  Then he makes his picks based on value+need.  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 If a player is gone, he takes the next best player on his list.  I don't think how Mel Kiper ranks them comes into play at all.

The thing with Robinson is he drafts players with the right team first, work ethic, and tough players. They may not be the so called elite chosen can't miss prospects. The draft is a crap shoot. However if you heard what both Davis and Jackson said as soon after being drafted: I am ready to go to work. The rest of the draft class: I will do what they ask me to do for the good of the team. It's Robinson's culture he has for this team. I really like it too. Give me the ones willing to work hard. He has a plan. Webster would go for the ones that had talent or workout warriors that caught everyone's eye, but what did that get us? Losing seasons and most still not on the team. Go JRob. Titan Up!!

I don't think so either. But further than that I don't think how other organizations and scouts rank them, matters that much either.

From a foundational point of view, it was the right time to get Mariotta his #1 receiver.. Marietta excels at plays under 25 yards with accuracy and timing.. Davis appears to be the perfect match to that style IMO..

Most weren't on any team soon after lol

There is an art to reaching.  If the guy fills a need, especially a dire one, you like his skillset and he has the attitude/work ethic you covet, you take him.  Reach or no reach.

More often than not, whether a guy is a reach is determined by who else is on the board, and how deep that year's draft is at that position.  So the question becomes one of whether or not you got the best of the group when you took him early, when there was a ton of talent at other positions still on the board.  Then player type enters the picture.  Do you pass on a big-bodied receiver like Julio or Evans because you have a DJax on the roster?  Even though they both have 1k+ yd potential?  Even when there's a premier OLB and two all-world DTs left up there?

Not if you're smart.  So you reach a little.  Not all reaches are a bad thing, especially when you're building the foundation of your team.

Pro Football Focus rated Corey Davis as the 7th overall prospect in the draft. This top 7 included Reuben Foster.

So it's not out of the realm of possibility that we rated things the same way.
