Dick Lebeau, the big nickel and Jamal Adams

Credit to @ctm for mentioning to me how much Lebeau likes to play 3 safeties.....

The more I think about this stuff the more I think Adams would fit the Titans at 5 more than anyone. Teams are playing a safety in the nickel more and more. The Giants and Cards have really done it well with Tyrann Mathieu and Landon Collins. If you can get a guy like Adams who can play up close and defend the run, cover the TEs and RBs and even line up over the slot receiver it gives your defense a ton of flexibility.

This would have the same impact(way more coverage ability) as Foster in terms of defending the middle of the field where the Titans were very weak and exploited by teams, especially the Colts.

Adams is the perfect prospect to play the "Big Nickel". Here is a good article on the scheme:

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000375711/article/big-nickel-package-emerging-as-nfls-hottest-defensive-trend

Given the challenges of defending hybrid tight ends, defensive coordinators are better served pitting an athletic safety with corner-like cover skills against a big-bodied pass catcher. Safeties are quick enough to run with these types of tight ends down the seam, while also possessing the athleticism to battle on post-ups and 50-50 balls in the red zone.

Most importantly, the presence of a hybrid safety on the field gives a defensive coordinator the freedom to use man or zone coverage without tipping his hand prior to the snap, which is a huge win for the defense.

The Titans mixed and matched with safeties up close by using Stafford and Byard but Adams would be a massive upgrade in this role. Byard and Adams would also give the Titans the ability to cover two TE sets and also give them a ton of range on 3rd and long where the Titans were terrible.

very sound argument for Adams.

the injury concerns surrounding

Hooker - Labrum/Hernia

Davis - Shoulder/Ankle

Lattimore - multiple hamstring injuries

Allen - multiple shoulder surgeries

could lead teams to view Adams as a safer pick, especially inside the top 5 picks.

I don't know why but I still get the feeling JRob will trade back from 5 and get that second rounder he desperately wants.

However, what in your opinion on what stands out about Adams. What specific traits and skills sets does he have that warrants a top 5 pick.

I don't pretend to break down film or know how to scout players. Everything I get is from "experts" and former GM/NFL turned analyst. These people seem to think he's worthy of a top 5 pick and fits the scheme as I laid out.

He sounded like he wanted to get the 2nd rounder back but to me going up from 18 to an earlier position to get someone like Foster or Barnett would be even better. Adams and Foster would help the team more than anything imo

I'd love to see them use one of the 3rd rounders and come out of the 1st round with some combo of Adams/Foster/Barnett

Remember, Robinson gave up a lot to get back up and get Conklin.

Fast physical and one of the best tacklers in the draft  What else......he was the defensive QB his entire time at LSU.  He is elite in every respect.

I see a good safety prospect not "elite".  He puts a number of highlight hits on tape and plays the game with aggression and passion.  He tends to take bad angles which isn't going to fly in the NFL.  My biggest complaint is he is a poor pursuer coming back across the field, once he feels the play is out of reach he gives up.  Coverage is good not great, 1 int this year on a lucky over thrown ball.  This is playing the devils advocate and nit picking.  He looks to be the best safety in this draft class but I don't think enough is their to call him a top 5 pick.

2010 - Eric Berry 5

2004 - Sean Taylor 5

Last two safeties to go within the top 5, how does Adams compare to these guys.

That is why I'm leaning mroe to a CB or WR with that #5 pick (asusming a pass rusher is not avaiable or Allen).  Adams really has to be HOF material to merit that early of a pick at his position.  Same with Foster.  The odds are both are quality players but hard to say if they measure up to that high bar.

If we could manage to trade back between 6-12 and land Adams/2nd pick I'll be fine with that, just don't feel he is a top 5 pick.

Love Foster.  Not quite as high on Adams.  Someone said he's a great tackler but i've seen him miss several easy tackles.  He likes to dive at ankles the way Griffin used to do instead of take on guys physically.  Coverage, he's streaky in my opinion.  Not to say he's not a damn good prospect, just that I would be happier with a pick like Foster and then getting a safety a little later I think.

My opinion:  Way better than Berry and as close to Taylor as I have seen........Taylor was big fast great tackler and great ball skills.......Adams has it all.  I just do not think he is as nasty as Taylor was.

Not even Ed Reed was as good as Adams coming out.  And Reed was a ball hawk at Miami but his run skills were questioned.  Turns out he was a film demon and made up for his lax tackling by getting to the whole fast all the time.

When you watch Adams tackle he demolishes people especially at the edge one on one.......very few NFL S have this ability.  Maybe Thomas is the only one but he is not a great tackler.  Berry the same way........Berry is a cerebral S like Reed.

We have a ball-hawking FS in Byard.

It's time to go get our true SS now.  We need an enforcer in the secondary.
