Just how much did we upgrade our team vs 2015?

Well lets look position by position at our roster in the form of upgrade vs downgrade...

QB - Same

RB - Upgraded

- We added Murray, a proven veteran RB who held the rushing crown just two years ago, and steps in day 1 giving us a top tier RB.

- We also added Derrick Henry in the 2nd round. A 6'2 247lb RB who ran a 4.54 forty and is literally a fucking brick. Will he amount to the same success in the NFL? Remains to be seen. I am not a huge fan of the pick, but he is a Titan and I will accept him with open arms, and hope for the best. The potential is definitely there. No denying that. It's not like he is a project player... He just needs to be in the correct scheme.

Murray + Henry = Upgrade over Andrews, Sankey, Cobb

WR - Upgraded

- We signed Rishard Matthews who was one of my favorite offseason acquisitions... He adds a legit #2 threat to the outside WR position, and allows for Kendall Wright to work from the slot where he fits best. We still have Hunter and Douglas as the 4th and 5th WR and McBride who contributes to ST's and is Wrights backup in the slot.

TE - Same

OL - Upgraded

- We moved up in the draft to take the highest rated OT outside of Tunsil in Jack Conklin. He fits exactly what we want to do. He is proven in pass protection against some of the nations best DL, and is a man amongst men in run blocking. He comes from a pro system at MSU, and starts day 1 at RT. We retained Byron Bell to be the swing OL who can play either OG position and either OT position. We have Warmack on a contract year at RG who should finally step his game up. Actually, I expect Warmack to have his best season yet b/c of the contract.

- We also added Ben Jones who is a savvy veteran at C, and very smart. He is the guy who upgrades Schwenke and gets the line in correct positioning, and makes adjustments in protection. This has been a big piece of the line we have missed since Mawae. This can't be understated how big of an upgrade not only to the OL, but the offense as a whole.

- Poutasi our 3rd round pick last year is looking to be our starter at LG where he will fit naturally. He was out of place at RT and overwhelmed. He gets to play at LG where he has a 3 year veteran at LT in Lewan to his left, and a 5 year veteran at C in Jones to his right. This kid is set up for a good year, and success.

DL - Upgraded

- We didn't do much outside of resigning Al Woods and now drafting Austin Johnson at NT... However, this is how you look at it...

- Austin Johnson replaces Sammie Lee Hill who was never a good fit, and battled injuries his entire stint here... We lost Mike Martin but that wasn't a big deal as he never saw any playing time since the move to 3-4... We retained Karl Klug a pass rush specialist, and Blackson enters his 2nd year after a promising rookie season, and Jones enters his 3rd year after a promising full year of starting.

ILB - Upgraded

- We replaced Zach Brown Mr. Inconsistent "I can't score a TD b/c my teammate is 30 yards infront of me blocking a QB so I will run into him" with Sean Spence a proven coverage LB from the same system in Pittsburgh. We also claimed Nate Palmer off waivers and he is the upgrade to Steven Johnson at ILB...

- Avery Williamson showed tons of potential and promise last year, and is a tackling machine. He may be a 2 down LB, but he is a damn good 2 down LB, and we signed the guy we want in the nickel package in Sean Spence who is twice the player Zach Browns potential ever was.

OLB - Upgraded

- Morgan comes back from injury, and so does Mount the 5th round rookie who showed tons of potential early in the season. Going into the draft Mount was the 3rd OLB on the depth chart with David Bass behind him... We saw just how putrid our pass rush was when Morgan went down, and we didn't have Mount to back him up so we relied on Bass...

- We draft Kevin Dodd who had 12.5 sacks last year and 20+ TFL... A 6'5 275lb OLB/DE from Clemson whose lightbulb turned on this year and he lit it up with 7.5 sacks in his final 5 games... Lebeau is probably salivating at the fact he has 4 quality OLB's, 3 of which are sure fire starters... Orakpo and Morgan get someone to relieve them throughout games making them more effective, and less prone to injury. Love the addition of Dodd.

DB - Upgraded

- We cut Michael Griffin who became a huge liability in the passing game and run game... We also let Coty Sensabaugh walk who was the new Toast

- We didn't add any big names in FA, and there can be an argument that Blake might be an equal to Sensabaugh, but idk if he even makes the roster... We signed McCain who will compete day 1 for the NB role and had success as a NB in Pitt with Lebeau. McCain will battle Riggs who was an UDFA last year and showed lots of potential for the NB spot.

- We signed Rashad Johnson the FS from Arizona to patch our FS opening. Johnson is a good veteran and a major upgrade to Griffin. While Johnson has some limitations to his game, he is way better in pass coverage than Griffin ever was. He is tough as nails... This is a guy who lost a finger in a game and kept playing... I like him.

- We drafted Kevin Byard in the 3rd round. FS out of MTSU and has 19 career interceptions and a knack for finding the endzone... This kid stands at 6' 218lb and runs a 4.42 forty. He needs to work on his tackling some, but I think that is a common theme for most FS's... He is very rangy, ballhawk, and fast. Supposedly very smart kid who blew away our scouts and JR in his meetings. I expect him to start day 1.

All in all during FA and the first 3 rounds of the NFL draft we have upgraded every piece of this team... While we still need more players, especially at CB, we should definitely be much better than we were last season.

The addition of an extra 1st round pick, and 3rd round pick gives us the chance of finding some more elite talent in next years draft.

Overall, I am happy with what Jon Robinson has done so far, and while most of it is not "pretty" it is what was needed. We had to fix both lines, running game, and pass rush, and that is exactly what he has done.

Hopefully tomorrow he will add a solid CB, and some more depth to areas of need.

He is clearly building this team from the 53rd player to the 1st. The way it should be done.

They're just saying the height and weight are right next to each other (6' 218lb) and it looked like you said he was 6' 2.

Yeah I see that now... Oh well, I can fix it.

Regardless...

When you read this it kind of sums up how much better this football team is, despite the fact we drafted Henry and haven't taken a CB/WR yet...

We have gotten better top to bottom.

With 30 million in cap space, and more cap money opening next year... I see us signing a big FA on defense, maybe offense, and adding skill position players early in the draft... Probably an offensive and defensive guy respectively in the 1st round...

Hopefully the Rams bottom out this year and land us the #1 pick and we can trade it to the Browns or whoever else wants Watson and acquire a boatload of picks...

B/c if we got two 2nds, 2 thirds, 2 firsts for Goff... Imagine what we will get for Watson.

I can see people wanting to finally sign here next year... They will look at the team with respect in the sense we have 2 first rounders, franchise QB, 2 good RB's, damn good OL, 3 legit pass rushers, or should I say a damn good young front 7, and hopefully a promising young safety duo...

that should be enough to attract a top CB in FA and WR in FA as well...

I say we should extend Delanie for 2 more years... He will be attractive teammate to his fellow NFL peers...

2016 won't be a playoff year... This division clearly belongs to the Jags on paper... But we will be the 2015 Oakland Raiders in 2016

Just to borrow the 94-95 Orlando Magic's motto... "why not us, why not now?"

Who cares if he put the wrong height or misspelled his name lol....This was a great break down of how we upgraded. Let's just hope it's not just on paper.

I didn't put wrong height or weight lol was just close together and looked that way.

Its all correct. I'm not gonna change it.

Just thought I would break everything down and show just how we upgraded.

I fully expect someone from the Tennessean to steal this idea and write about it.

So im claiming ownership. Kuharskey you have been warned. Climer and Wolf you too.

Lord knows they take a lot of info from this board to write with

The system is designed for teams that are bad to improve. That's why bad teams get better draft picks than good teams.

Did we maximize the value of our picks? Hell freaking no. Did we maximize the value of our cap space? Hell freaking no? Have we improved as much as we should have? No. Are we still very likely one of the worst teams in the league? Absolutely yes.

Disagree

Conklin, Dodd, Johnson and Byard were all great picks and 3 are starters day 1 and Dodd will get a crap ton of playing time.

We did very well.

I think they've done a great job of building the depth and plugging holes in a leaky front 7.

The need in the secondary is overstated.  They went out and got two CBs and a Safety during FA.  McCourty is healthy again.  They are building up the front 7.  Oh and with a running game and Mariota's quick pass skill set, they might be the best third down team in the league so the defense should play fresh more.  Totally different defense if you're playing with a lead.

I think safety was a big need but they have now added Johnson and Byard, that's a pretty good upgrade

I think the needs in the secondary are overblown as well. Griffin being lost was a huge problem & Rashad Johnson is a good pass coverage FS. McCourty is a good, solid corner who is healthy. That's 2 big additions as he basically didn't play last year.

Don't get me wrong, I would've loved a corner this year, but the talent wasn't there. This was a terrible corner class, did we really want Xavien Howard? I can see Alexander with the 3rd pick but we obviously loved Henry.
