Instead of Negativity, let's talk about Marcus Mariota

Mariota is a stud, and my opinion is we dont need to hide him behind a power offense. He's going to be much better than Russel Wilson, who has to run to find passing lanes because of his height. I think we would have whipped the Colts yesterday if Chip Kelley were calling the plays. Whiz went into possum mode with a lead and it was idiotic as hell.

This actually could be a very good point. I don't blame Webster or Whiz for developing a power offense strategy for this team.  Its had success with Wilson, Kaepernick and Big Ben in his first year.  Its a good strategy with a young qb.

But the offense has looked better going through MM- even with him as a rookie.  Could the Titans need to do a complete strategy shift because of MM blowing away expectations?  When the team was built around the idea of a power offense, can it successfully transition to something else mid season? Does it have the horses?

Whiz has shown the ability to adapt in the past.  That could be an interesting story line to follow through the season and alter teh course of the team for next year.

I know hes a rookie, but is there every a situation where Brady/Rodgers/Manning is carrying too much of the offense? The kid can play, let him loose. He not on a pitch count or something.

At this point in time I have more faith in his dinks and dunks than any of the RBs moving the ball on early downs. Mariota's own running game is going to open up much more than any of our current backs will.

He is not Brady, Rodgers or Manning yet. If you want wins in his rookie year, he needs more help. As he develops you can put more on his shoulders. But guess what? Brady, Rodgers and Manning have gotten help from the running game. All three teams have looked for consistency there to help their QB.

Our QB is not on Brady, Rodgers or Manning's level and yet he's being asked to shoulder the offense as if he's already booked for the hall.

Rodgers, the best QB in the game right now, has a RB and running game he can rely on (when healthy).

The fact you feel more confident in dinks and dunks over our running game tells me enough. Unfortunately, 47 drop backs leaves you susceptible to more sacks and more turnovers than running it 20 times and passing it 27 times. It's football 101.

Yeah but the shift has already happened because we can't run consistently. Mariota threw it 46 times yesterday. The only sign that Whiz wanted some power run team was on that two-point conversion. But ultimately I think Whiz was making an excuse for a bad call by him.

Why not say Douglas is in DGB's way?  Hunter did have a nice catch and offers some vertical threat.  Seems like DGB, Hunter and Wright is the best combo but doesn't fit with the insane quad TE offense we run.

There is some truth to the fact the Packers got Lacy, and other teams try and get a better than average threat at RB.  But IMO the OL and RB situation isn't that bad and we are DGB away from being darn good at WR as soon as he figures out the playbook.  Then a quality RB becomes a luxury you can afford.  The problem is we spent a 2nd round pick on a quality Rb already but didn't pick one.  If they pick the right guy, Hill (we signed McCluster as the 3rd down change of pace guy already anyway) we have what we need.

Exactly. I'm not saying we need to invest more, I'm saying that it'd be nice for someone to step up to help him out. We need a little balance to keep leads.

I think this is definitely the discussion going on in the building right now.  I am not apologizing for Whiz, but the thought that we need a power running game to take pressure off a rookie QB from a spread system makes a lot of sense.  But with Mariota exceeding anyone's wildest expectations, I think at some point you have to just cut him loose.

That said he definitely does not need to be throwing it 40+ times a game if it can be avoided.

Agreed Sox - If Hunter can just continue to make a deep catch now and again and be a semi-reliable threat to catch a pass, we are DGB development away from really having something.

It really is interesting to see our WRs automatically look much better (not great, but better) with Mariota at QB.

It took a very bad team to allow us to get Mariota.

Mariota is looking like he could be a great player, but don't forget the statement above.  He can mask some of the team's weaknesses, but we're still a bad team.  In a year or two, that could change, but we went 2-14 for a reason.  To that point, losses don't really upset me this season.  It's all about Mariota's development, and I'm ecstatic in that regard.

Everything with you is about the running game.  I'd say you're the one who's clueless.

Yes. Clueless... that's why the GM and coach are trying to establish that by drafting another RB, FB, signing TEs while going in a different direction at QB. A QB you now love. But yeah, no idea what I'm talking about.

The problem is it's still not working due to injuries etc.

That's always the case. We complain about how we've drafted WRs but don't realize that a bad QB can stall a WRs career before it gets started. That's why I'm optimistic about DGB.

That has nothing to do with your point.  Your point is about the actual running back.  It's been wrong for years and will continue to be wrong.

I have no issues with trying to build a running game.  You do that by using blocking TE's and getting good interior line play.  Which is what the Titans are trying to do.  What you don't do is waste a second round pick on a running back.  And that has nothing to do with Sankey.  It has everything to do with the fact that the position is easy enough to find someone that it's not necessary to spend that high a pick on a RB.

If Cobb succeeds then fine.  He was also, what, a 5th round pick?  That to me is appropriate for the position.

LOL at the Rams for taking Todd Gurley at #10 by the way.  What a friggin joke.

Of course you provide your QB with all the weapons and help possible... my point is I just don't think we need training wheels on Mariota. If the game calls for 40+ pass attempts why not give him that opportunity?

Whats the difference between a sack and a negative running play? Yesterday the pass pro was great.. if this was the Cleveland game probably be a different story. Its only susceptible to more turn overs if you don't trust you QB... but passing in general is a risk/reward... big chunks of yardage to be gained but always the possibility of errant throws or defenders making plays.

No my point was that Mariota needs consistent help. And not enough is coming from the running game. We need to be more consistent there. We don't have the RB to do it right now.

You say the position is "easy" but teams keep having trouble finding it and keep investing. You think the Broncos are happy right now?

Mariota is taking on too much of this offense.

You're stuck in the 90's.  I don't know what else to say.
