Cyrus Posted August 22, 2014 Report Share Posted August 22, 2014 It's amazing to me that anyone could watch Mettenberger play and not think that he looks excellent (without qualification). Gunnel said he looked like a rookie. A Bleacher Report article by Rivers McCown said he looked like a rookie too. Hardly. He's made rookie mistakes in terms of turning the ball over, but he's throwing the ball at multiple levels with location and timing as if he were in the league for several years. He may not be a franchise quarterback, but he sure looked like one against the Saints - full stop. I actually think Mettenberger looks more comfortable in the pros than in college. The entire style of play suits his skill-set. He played with great rhythm as well which makes me think that he was coached to push the ball downfield at LSU. I'm not even sure he's played with Kendall Wright and Nate Washington yet - he's making journeyman vets like Coffman and Robiskie look good. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Ridiculous Locker's velocity looks better on his ball, but his throwing platform looks very mechanical. He still seems to struggle with throwing from different platforms (feet in different locations) which is a problem. This is exacerbated when the pocket is compressed. Conversely Mettenberger threw two accurate passes (including one for a first down) with one leg entirely wrapped up by a defender and another with zero function space whatsoever. He can throw accurately from different platforms which is a huge deal and an NFL trait. I was hoping the Titans were going to design an offense around Locker when they drafted him (like Shanahans) with a moving pocket but it never happened. He's improved in the pocket some, but Mettenberger is simply a natural pocket passer. I'm just not sure Locker is going to fit what Whisenhunt wants. I felt like Roethlisberger was a better comparison for Mettenberger than it was for Bortles. Name similarity aside, they have a similar body style and are both large-framed quarterbacks who are natural passers. Another surprising observation during the preseason is that Mettenberger seemed a bit more mobile scrambling than he seemed at college. Plus Rivers has the bizarre throwing motion. Roethlisberger is absolutely more improvisational - I merely think that Mettenberger was a better comparison for him than Bortles. It's not that Whisenhunt has shown he's unafraid to make a switch, he's been downright crazy when it comes to switching his QBs. Whisenhunt is likely going to be conservative to the point of staying with Locker longer than he would have if not for all the embarrassment with the Cards switching the QBs. If they took everyones name off the jerseys and no one knew how the 3 QBs were acquired does anyone actually believe Locker would win an open QB battle? I don't. I used to love mobile QB's and think that it was going to be the new wave, which is one of the main reasons I liked Young so much. Now I am 100% against mobile QB's and never want anything to do with one again. We'll see if Locker can develop into one. But the fact that he can rush for yards is a non-factor to me. Same here.
