Thoughts on Locker and Mettenberger

Locker has shown serious progression even throught the limited playing time.. He looks confident and more of a leader than he ever did before.. He can still extend plays and its rare he gets sacked. I thought Locker looked better than Mettenberger did tonight, if you consider the people they were playing against. Mettenberger looks promising but he's not a better player than Locker right now. His interception was awful and he turned the ball over twice. His pocket presence and feel for the rush weren't great either. That being said, I think the QB situation is better than alot of people around the league think

One (possibly more) of those wouldnt be turnovers with the starters.

I think some are being a bit harsh on Locker & I think it's because he went to his primary read so often, because it was open. People want to see the QB scanning the field & going to their 2nd or 3rd option, because it makes them feel better about how he's reading the field but in this case Jake didn't have to. He picked out his primary read quickly & threw accurately, the throw to Hunter was beautiful. That said, WTF was that airmail to Wright, how is he still doing this shit? C'mon. Until that point I felt great.

The anticipation on the throw ZM made to Hunter was something we haven't seen from Jake in 3+ years. He threw it well before the D could react & led Hunter perfectly. I feel like if Jake completed it Hunter would've had to jump to catch it or catch it flat footed & not been able to run afterward. There's no question ZM is a better natural passer, it's not even close. He throws with more anticipation, accuracy, and his arm is so strong. That said, athleticism matters, and right now ZM has a fairly elongated release, has fumbled twice & let's not ignore his horrifying pick today. But I saw more pure quarterbacking from ZM than Ive ever seen from Locker & it is getting obvious how this is playing out. I wouldn't be shocked if Jake's leash is much shorter than anyone thought it would be going into the season.

Also, is there anything lamer than the generic "so & so is also having a great preseason, everybody needs to relax" argument? Besides that ZM's first touch was against the starters, people are excited about the way he throws the ball & how natural he looks in the pocket, not his stats. I mean, put some effort in if you didn't like what you saw from the guy rather than just repeating some oft used line.

I used it last week but in this game the sample size was too large.

His skill set is undeniable

Thank God the kid has a real coaching staff and Munch and co. are gone

I actually do not think it does, at all.

Being able to accurately pass the ball from the pocket is what matters.

Sure, and frankly I'm ready to go ahead with ZM sooner rather than later but my one concern is the amount of fumbles & sacks we may see early on. It takes awhile to learn to move around the pocket like Manning & Brady do. But he's also not the doofus in the pocket I thought he may be.

Way too much is being made of Mettenberger's mobility/athleticism, namely by code. He's not Jamarcus Russell or Bledsoe back there. He looks on par with Brady, Rivers, and Manning in his ability to move within the pocket. Ill take that any day over guys who bail at the first sign of trouble.

I agree. He moves a little better than I thought which is huge, because this was the main concern. He does have a good feel for pocket movement & should only get better with playing time.

I'm trying to figure out if the fumble was more on him or Stingely, probably Stingely. He may have a bit of Kerry Collins to his delivery. But overall I'm psyched.

The TD pass to Hunter was good but the really impressive one was the back shoulder sideline pass to Hunter before that. It was his 2nd or 3rd throw, that play can't be defensed and Mett put it on the money on a rope. Locker would be lucky to make that throw 1 out of 20 attempts.

That throw is part of the reason Rodgers is so good, if thrown right you can't stop it. It's a very difficult throw you don't see the average QBs making consistently. I don't even think Locker would've tried to throw it.

I think Metts performance has clouded some peoples view of Locker last night. Locker did a lot right and looked good doing it. I have to admit that Mett looks pretty damn good.

The running game is in big trouble.

His college highlights showed a lot of those passes.
