oldschool
My guess is Whitehurt took the job expecting Locker to get injured, Whiz and the potential QBOF had nothing to do wiith it. If you were a backup you would choose Locker over Rivers 100% of the time. This is the only hole in my argument and one I've thought of. The question is whether Whitehurst truly believes he can be a starter or has he resigned himself to being a career backup? I tend to lean toward the latter. oldschool
Yes you did. You just hate it when you were wrong. Find the posts where I stated this. I have always maintained drafting a RT who can't move to LT in the first is a bad idea. I have never stated drafting LTs in the first is stupid. Starkiller
At least Whitehurst probably thought he'd have a better chance to play here backing up Locker than in SD.
ZEPPELIN
Zepp, I think Mettenberger has all the skills. The problem is whether he'll ever get the opportunity he needs to prove it. Step one is for him to take Whitehurst's job and that would surprise me. People forget Whitehurst could have stayed in San Diego for the same money. I doubt he traded in job security for a spot in Nashville. It stand to reason he was told he'd be the backup here too. If the Titans don't envision Mett having an opportunity to at least compete for the backup job, then why give up an extra pick to move up and draft him? I think they see him as a possible starter if Locker gets hurt or stinks it up. I agree he won't have any real opportunity if Locker performs. That's a pretty big if though. oldschool
It is there. You look for it. Trust me it it is there. Just as I thought you have nothing.

Because it was a 7th rd pick. He is a fantastic developmental guy with great value. He's just not going to get the opportunity to start until 2015 and will then have to beat out a high pick. His rd to starting is very long.
amyinsparta
Who knows and who cares? All I know is with 100 percent certainty that Charlie wasn't brought here to play. So quit whining. I was getting thoroughly annoyed at all the arguments from people who think they know more than the coaches. I just wish some would interview for some jobs with football teams. I've never seen so many 'experts' on a forum in quite some time. We all have our opinions, but that is all they are. We cannot predict the future and if we were smarter than the coaches, surely some of us would be coaches by now, don't you think? But all we are are pretend coaches and then we get all hot and bothered when the real coaches don't do things the way we feel they should be done. Give it rest and wait and see how it pans out. Then, if your predictions are correct, you can crow about it until the cows come home.
Tim
At least Whitehurst probably thought he'd have a better chance to play here backing up Locker than in SD. Charlie isn't retarded,so, no, probably not. He knows his role as career clipboard holder/coach.
Starkiller
That doesn't mean he doesn't think he can play.
pierce2walker
I do agree that the discussion has gotten very out of hand. He has some very good tools to work with and he plays the most important position. So yes it was a good pick and worth the risk. But he's still a 6th round quarterback with several issues. He has the tools to succeed (why he was worth it), but realistically it's much more likely that he doesn't amount to anything. To me, a starting QB is likely to be a top priority next offseason, BUT we do have 2 wildcards this season in Locker and Mettenberger. Quality starting QBs are so elusive and both of these guys have their flaws, but they both have the tools to succeed so it will at least be interesting to see it play out. NoD
The question to me is would they keep Whitehurst over Mett as the backup next year if they choose one of the two? Considering Whitehurst has zero upside and is useless as a football player. I dont know what Whiz history is on how many QBs he keeps active.
Starkiller
For comparison sake, imagine we had drafted Jamarcus Russell in the 6th round... Those big, strong armed LSU QBs always pan out, right?
Stan
For comparison sake, imagine we had drafted Jamarcus Russell in the 6th round... Those big, strong armed LSU QBs always pan out, right? The money Russell got was ridiculous. He got what 40 million guaranteed? It was disaster from day 1.
N/A
If healthy going into camp, Mettenberger could be game 1 2013 starter. Locker is that bad.
Face
There's two different arguments at play here though. You're probably correct about ZM not starting next year, I wouldn't bet that. But you also present him as some no name loser 6th round pick who the coach's wouldn't piss on if he was on fire. This is what I'll say, if by midseason or later, if Jake & the team suck & ZM is healthy, he will start games this year, and I don't mean a token start in game 16. If they're 3-6, 4-8 & Jake isn't playing well the team will move on from him.
