Spending went up under Obama because of the stimulus and the bailout. The stimulus was 40% tax cuts like the Republicans wanted and everyone would have done the bailout. Bush got on TV and begged for it before he left office and Boehner got in front of the House and cried for everyone to support it. The month Obama took office we were losing 750k jobs a month, the last 15 months we've added jobs.

Fixing the deficit would be very easy but lobbyist won't let the politicians do it.

Get the hell out of the wars, slash defense spending, let the bush tax cuts expire, raise capitol gains tax from 15% back up to 30%, take the cap off of SS tax, go to a single payer health insurance and remove the burden from businesses, stop the war on drugs and legalize them.....

Bush did right to lower taxes, the problem was he then went ahead and spent way too much. At the same time the Republican Congress backed down and gave in to all Bush's wishes. Of course the Democrats all voted for the wars and medicare prescription bill too. But Oilerman is nuts if he thinks Republicans spend as much as Democrats. Obama doesn't want to even cut spending now. It was Republicans that kept Clinton from spending much more than he wanted. The Democrats never stop Republicans from spending, since they are the tax and spend party.

You fix the deficit by geting out of the wars (agreed), slash entitlement spending, and shrink government. Raising taxes would hurt the economy, so I disagree that raising them would help reduce the debt.

"Shrinking goverment" is one of our biggest problems right now to the economy. All shrinking governement really means is cutting governement jobs. There aren't enough jobs in the private sector to begin with and by "shrinking the government" we're making the issue worse by adding more unemployed and taking the money they were making and spending out of the economy.

Tax cuts for big businesses and the wealthy doesn't stimulate the economy. Businesses don't hire employess based on their revenue or profits. They base their hiring based on the demand of the product. The key to get businesses to hire more people is to increase the demand for the businesses product. That means more money spent by consumers into the system.

So yes trying to limite goverment spending sounds great to reduct the deficit. Except it means fewer jobs, more unemployed, less consumer spending and ultimately less tax revenue to pay that deficit.

Its a tangled mess. Getting the deficit under control is extremely important but not at the cost of economic growth, which is what most of the Tea Party group is missing.

We all know what we need to do, but nobody wants to do it.

Taxes need to be raised, but everyone is too selfish to allow it. And I know the typical conservative response is going to be "but...but...but....the government is just wasteful!" and act like that is all on the democrats when it is on both sides. Sure, the government can be wasteful, but that is no excuse for us not to do what needs to be done. We shouldn't be making America into a second (or third) rate country in the future just so we can enjoy everything in our times. Stupid Baby Boomers.

Reagan and Bush both ran up massive federal deficits. Mostly in good economic times when you should NOT run a deficit.

And you know why? Because for every dollar Reagan cut from taxes the democrat controlled congress spent three.....
