Number9
I think the Titans running game has been overvalued in this discussion as being a big asset. The Titans will have to throw to set up the run to be successful. If they come out running CJ, Locker is going to be under pressure to throw into passing defenses. CJ is not/hasn't shown lately he is capable of picking up 3-5 yards consistently on 1st downs. If they let CJ kill a half trying to get on tract, they will fall behind. So the Titans have the weapons to throw repeatedly to loosen up defenses and this is what Jake is going to have to do to win games.
scine09
I have a question... What makes you think that Jake Locker is ANYWHERE close to what Aaron Rogers was in 2008? I have another question... What "good" comes from losing 8 or 10 close games? That tells me Locker can't close the sale. You know what happens to a salesman who *almost* closes a bunch of prospective sales? I'll give you a big, obvious clue: He's fired. That's like saying "Derrick Morgan ALMOST got 15 sacks!" What is the goal of seeing Locker improve without winning? To be the face of a poster on the side of the stadium? Bobble heads? So should Aaron Rodgers have been cut after 2008 because they lost a ton of close games? There's nothing in Locker's play suggesting anything. I am merely posing a question. The most important thing about this season is Locker's progress. If Locker is putting up huge numbers and the team is losing at the end because the defense stinks (much like GB of 2008) then I am fine. Would you feel better about 2014 if Locker puts up big numbers and proves that he can play in this league and the Titans go, say 8-8 and miss the playoffs or would you rather see the team go 10-6 on the strength of a bunch of fluky wins on special teams where Locker doesn't contribute much at all and when he plays he's not putting up stats or managing the game well and Fitzpatrick plays a few games? I know which option I'd pick.
scine09
Sounds like NE might be just fine.... "By all accounts, Brady is having a great camp, which really shouldn't be a surprise at all. Then duringthe Patriots' competitive practices against the Eagles this week, Brady went bananas against them. Brady completed all seven of his attempts in 7-on-7 drills against the Eagles, then completed 17-of-21 in 11-on-11 work, and two of the incompletions were dropped passes, according to the Boston Herald. That was on Tuesday." http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/tom-brady-reportedly-looking-great-camp-nobody-least-164000168.html I don't think Tom Brady is exactly the biggest concern for the Patriots. I look at the roster and I see a team lacking talent in a bunch of other crucial areas. The 2002 team had Tom Brady too and a much better D. The AFC East was also a lot better then. scine09
HOU and DEN are the teams to beat in the AFC clearly. HOU is a better team imo, but the QB edge obviously goes to DEN. I do wonder about how much losing Dumervil is going to negatively affect their D though. SEA and SF are the vogue picks of the NFC. I think SEA could underachieve a little bit. They're not sneaking up on anyone this year. SF will be up there again. Too much talent and coaching. ATL will too, but I think their D is questionable and do Ryan/Smith have clutch factor? Probably not going out on a huge limb here, but I think NO is going to surprise and be a top 2-3 team again. Everyone is saying how much more focused and intense Payton is coming off the missed year because of BountyGate. Their D was historically bad last season. If they can at least get to middle of the pack, I think they'll have enough. Jimmy Graham is going to have a monster season. He's in a contract year. What's so great about Houston? I just don't see it. They have a mediocre system QB in Schaub, aging players all over the roster in critical spots. And they faded down the stretch. Who did they add to make them better this year? Like New England, Houston could go to the Super Bowl because the AFC is so damn weak. As far as your comment on the "clutch factor," that is one of the most overrated things in football if not all of sports. What defines the "clutch factor?" Ryan did lead Atlanta to a win in the final drive against Seattle last year. So I guess he was clutch that day. The idea is so silly. Essentially you're not clutch, until you are. Joe Flacco wasn't clutch, until last year when he was. Eli Manning wasn't clutch until he was. Tom Brady hasn't been clutch in the playoffs since the 2003 Super Bowl as that's the last time he's succeeded in a tight spot in the playoffs. So is he now "not clutch?" I know which option I'd pick. If he struggles then maybe they will GET RID OF HIM and move on to a QB that can win games. If Locker plays well they will need to add pieces to the defense in 2014. Then everyone will say 'oh the defense is too young and needs time to develop.' Then the defense develops in 2015 and plays well, but then CJ is too old and it's time to replace Michael Roos. Round and round we go.
Number9
J.J. Watt?Cushing is coming back, too. Watt was on NFL radio today talking about how he is studying his game trying to get fundamentally better. Sounded like the sob is real dedicated to improving his game. Watt was on NFL radio today talking about how he is studying his game trying to get fundamentally better. Sounded like the sob is real dedicated to improving his game. That's not a good thing. He was probably the best defensive player in the league last year, I can only imagine what he's going to do this year more mentally prepared.
Vintagerobots
Denver, New England and the Ravens (you know, the team that just won the superbowl). I agree SF and Green Bay are in the top 5. Atlanta has no defense and Seattle isn't going to have such a patsy schedule this year. They are going to disappoint a lot of people. lol at even considering the Saints in that group. The SF Giants won the world series last year and are now terrible.

JLocker10
The SF Giants won the world series last year and are now terrible. Makes me very happy as a Dodger fan 8-). They can't pitch. That's why they won. That, and timely hitting. But they can't play effective small ball now. Cain is having a bad year. Lincecum is not the same pitcher. Vogelsong was terrible then got injured. Madison Bumgarner's the only good consistent SP they have this season. The Saints went 8-8 in 2007 and 2008 Then went 13-3 in 2009 and won the SB.They were 7-9 last season. I don't see 13-3, but they can definitely be 10-6 or 11-5 and be a threat The Seahawks were 7-9 in 2011.The 49ers were 7-9 in 2010, then went 13-3 and made the NFC Champ It is possible to go from bad/mediocre to a contender in a year. Not that that's what going to happen with us, but it can happen If NO can at least be decent on D, they can be a top NFC team imo. I'm a big Sean Payton guy. He is really determined to bounce back after last year's debacle. Drew Brees isn't going 7-9 again
JLocker10
I don't think Tom Brady is exactly the biggest concern for the Patriots. That wasn't my point. People question the skill players around Brady. Brady is going to be just fine. That's what a truly great QB can do for you. But NE D is too questionable imo. Take Brady out of the equation and look at the rest of NE talent, is it really that good? It's middle of the pack at best imo. You always have a chance with Brady, but I see them as a one and done team. They'll make the playoffs because of their division, but won't go far. JLocker10
Den is the best team in the AFC Agreed. Only concern for me would be Peyton's arm strength holding up and if they can replace Dumervil's production. Maybe Bailey's age too, but other than those things not much. .
