Johnathan Hankins/Sheldon Richardson

I am just starting to look at some film comparing these two guys. What I have noticed so far is the amount of double teams Hankins dealt with on a play by play basis. Also, I think I read somewhere he played 94% of Ohio State's defensive snaps last year for those that question his durability.

Anyone have an opinion on these guys?

Sheldon Richardson is really talented in my opinion and is a penetrating 3-Tech type defensive tackle. He actually plays with a pretty big motor on the field and can be relentless at times (at least judging from his 2011 games). The issue is that he's a JUCO guy who reportedly has some work ethic, attitude issues. Hankins on the other hand is a physically imposing defensive tackle who has some versatility, particularly as a nose. He has quick feet for his size and is an intriguing blend of speed/power. He idles at times, but some believe it was just a conditioning issue due to the amount of snaps he's played (as you alluded to).

I think Richardson is more talented, but Hankins could end up playing at a higher level if he's becomes better conditioned. He also offers more versatility too. I'm going to break into the 2012 games in a week or so. I've wondered if Hankins would be a good fit for the Titans and I think he would be due to his versatility. I'm not convinced that he's the right value though.

Haven't seen enough of Hankins to have a decent opinion, but Richardson is a DT in the classic pre-Gray era of Titans DTs. A bit like Tony Brown, except better. Disruptive in the middle. Solid pass rusher for a DT (though he isn't going to be W Sapp), and plays the run well, showing enough speed and hustle to chase a play down the line and make a play from behind even. Although he holds up well at the POA, he is probably a bit smaller than the team is wanting at this point at DT.

And yes, he does have an attitude, being the one that made the comment to Georgia about them playing "old man football." He did however personally apologize to Coach Richt and admit they got it handed to them by UGA after they played. So I'd say he's got a big attitude, but not necessarily a bad one.

Good to know. I think he may be the most talented pass-rusher of the bunch (including Lotulelei). I think Richardson fits though. The Titans would move Casey over to the NT position and put Richardson at the three-tech.

After giving this some thought id be kinda surprised if we go DT at 10 because we've spent two 3rds and a 5th rounder in the past couple drafts and they all contribute. Still think it can be a DE or a CB at 10 but its too early to call right now.

I like Hankins. He is big and Strong with Surprising burst for a man his size. Ohio State also lined him up at DE several times this year ( similar to what we used to do with Haynesworth) and he was just as effective. I have Hankins as the 8th Best player in the Draft, so I would have no problem taking him at 10 especially with Lotulelei likely gone by that point

I dont see how Star will get past the Jets. Cant the Jets use a DT?

They have Coples and Wilkerson. Picking Lotulelei would be serious tunnel vision, they have too many other needs elsewhere. The question is what the Raiders do.

Richardson's a stud imo

Super athletic guy, former TE

They do have to look into some issues though. He's supposedly not very bright. And he was suspended one game for an "academic violation"

The old man football comment doesn't bother, a lot of players say stuff like that. T Suggs has made a lot of off kilter comments.

I don't know about work ethic. If work ethic is an issue with Richardson, it doesn't show when he plays because he plays with a great motor

If Lotulelei is gone, as of right now i would pick Hankins at #10. I would like to see a DT rotation of Casey, Hankins, Martin, and D. Harris(Marks is gone) and Klug swithing between DT/DE. With that size in the middle you can protect Mccarthy a little more. Its still early...but I still say go DT in the 1st round.

I want the best DL we can get

And it seems less likely they go DE to me, so DT fits the bill just fine

We struggled at the POA

We need someone who can command double teams, it'd make the whole line better

Hankins is a massive dude too at 6'3 335 lb

The league is trending towards taller guys at DT who if they don't get immediate penetration try and bat the ball down; you need size and at least some smarts to play that way. Sylvester Williams, UNC, is an intriguing prospect, didn't play hardly in HS and was a Juco kid; lots of size and potential. Question is how far down the order will he still be available.
