I lived in Rosario, so I had Newell's Old Boys and Rosario Central as home town teams. Despite that the guy I lived with played for a C or D Newell's team... I was partial to Rosario Central. I actually went to a game and saw Ronaldo play for a visiting club from Brazil as he returned from some injury or another (you want a rivalry... try anything Brazil v anything Argentina). There is nothing like a live soccer match between clubs that matter. Nothing. Football games, even the biggest college rivalries, just don't compare. We had never played together before and many had no business being on that team, so we got handled every game. One of the best parts, though, was the first viewing party we went to. A local club (think golf club) invited us to a viewing party of an Argentina v Brazil world cup qualifier... we were all excited and the first goal of the game we did what you could imagine... we boisterously yelled "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAL." I've always imagined it would be hard to get the credit one deserves for being good... because what would a yankee know about soccer? Don't think there is a bias against US players in the EPL, there are very few of them in the league at all. Dempsey gets a lot of credit, as did Friedel when he played but he is getting really old now and Tottenham spent a lot of money on Hugo Lloris the French national keeper. I wonder if Porter getting the Portland gig is about trying to create that. It's the best way, imo. You have an identity and you instill the requisite skills in a player from day one. Get youth coaching up to even remotely good standards across the US (none of this parents who never played crap), figure out a way to improve ODP (unless it has changed since I played) and for God's sake... get some of the elite atheletes to keep playing soccer. I had just gotten into highschool coaching the last few years before I left Indiana and all of our best players coming up through the travel programs would pick football come highschool. It was damn near impossible to convince them to keep with soccer. One kid was short as hell but ungodly deft with the ball and just had instincts you can't teach, plus very good speed for his size... went for football in highschool and never did a damn thing. It was too glamorous an allure. I guarantee that kid would have gotten a full ride to college for soccer. Soccer has caught on as a fun sport, a kid sport, but not a serious sport. It is played by so many, but not at an acceptable level, even at the young ages, and then they inevitably determine that another sport would be cooler when the time comes to decide. The system with travel, highschool, college, etc is a huge weakness for the US. It lacks organization and standardization and the ability to identify and train true talent. Follow them for the same reason I became a Titans fan years ago... I just randomy started playing with them in soccer video games just like I did the Oilers in NFL Blitz on N64.
