abenjami
How the fuck did we not have a thread about this given it premiered today?
No1TitansFan
More of the GOT lite theme. They'll tease us a few more episodes before any dragon vs dragon war starts which is basically the premise of the whole series.
Starkiller
At least they weren’t quite as graphic with Blood and Cheese murdering a child as GoT was when they burned Shireen Baratheon

Well they established that the Greens were looking to avoid a war right up until Aegon’s son was murdered. Now it’s war for sure.

LOL Both sides were looking to avoid all out war up until the death of Lucerys. They were trying to get support from all of the great houses because if one claimant got a wide majority then it could have prevented war. After Lucerys was killed, war was inevitable even if the Greens didn’t all know it yet. Maybe killing Aemond in retribution wouldn’t have sparked an all out war (though I’d think it would) but killing Greens’ heir to the throne certainly would. Also, “stealing” the crown is debatable because there are 2 totally viable claims.

I'm certainly no expert on fictional succession claims but it seemed to me that Viserys wanted Rhaenyra.

Sure, but the realm historically had only ever crowned the 1st male heir.
Jamalisms
The Greens didn't have a viable claim. The king was clear, it was acknowledged and sworn to. It was so firm, in fact, that the show had to fabricate death bed bullshit to make it less obnoxious when the queen moved for crowning Aegon. But that's only an explanation by misunderstanding on her part. It's still not legitimate.

But that's only an explanation by misunderstanding on her part. It's still not legitimate. None of that matters once he’s dead. At that point much of the realm goes back to the 1st born son being the heir as was the standard. Women were not deemed to be rulers anywhere else in the realm and the Great Council shown in the opening of the 1st episode establishes that. Only Alicent seemed to care that the king apparently had a deathbed change of mind that he wanted Aegon to be his heir. The rest of the Greens had already intended to crown Aegon regardless of his stated wishes. That change literally only affects her motivations. Jamalisms
Legal succession, as decreed by the king and sworn to by all, is clear. What people are willing to do and what rationalizing they provide to break with their vows and to work against regal edict is another matter. Victors will write the history ... but, as a third party, we the viewers can only label Aegon an usurper.
Starkiller
Yes, that’s the way a modern Western audience is going to see it. In-world, it’s different. Men are universally given priority in any inheritance claim throughout the realm.
