I'm not naming a sports team, just pointing out why some find it objectionable. BTW, I was an Indian for 4 years in HS and proudly wore my Indian garb, lol.

IMO a vocal minority that take offense to everything is offended.  Most Native Americans have no issue with the nickname Indians for a sports team whereas Redskins certainly is more problematic.

The baseball team in Cleveland got under fire because the logo was objectionable.  All they had to do was re-do the logo.

Or Braves.  Or Indians.....BTW I do crack up about how offensive "Indians" is when they in fact designate themselves as "Indian reservation territory" across the country.

My brother is half Native American. I'd say vast majority refer to themselves as indians. The naming thing is kinda silly to them because it's just the white man's word for them. Why not just use the original?

They themselves consider each tribe to be individual names obviously. Imagine referring to all white people as Whites instead of Irish, German, Russian, etc. Many of the tribes up north have begun to refer to themselves as First Nation(s).

In my brother's case, his father is Lumbee. He looked like a black dude. Growing up we dealt with a lot of racism because my Mom's a redhead. He always took pride in being "indian."

Give them or compensate them for all the land that got stolen and pay them for all the gold extracted there, and there probably won't be an issue calling your sports team indians, a term that was coined to misrepresent the fact that Columbus was actually half a world away from the far east.

I don't think we owe indians jackshit. We owe black Americans reparations for slavery and the more importantly the racial, illegal discrimination that occurred after 1865, Indians were not sovereign nations, and we didn't do anything that they wouldn't have done to each other if they had the power.

If you don't believe this, research what the Commanches did once they acquired horses that escaped from skirmishes south of them. A small tribe expanded into an empire. I'd say that just about any tribe would've attempted to conquer the entire continent if given the opportunity. Do we owe them because we were more powerful?

Not the forum for it, but our governmen signed treaty after treaty guarantieeing them certain lands in perpetuity provided they would stay out of other areas and renegged on them; often because they found gold or something else of value on them.
