TGO's Offseason Plan - 2022 Edition: Update - No Lewan Trade

As always, this is some mix of what I think will happen and what should happen considering the parameters of the team build.

Time to Push the Envelope on cap strategy and Improve What We Do Best and Are Built to Do. Have to capitalize on this SB window before transitioning to another in the future.

This will likely piss a lot of people off, but it's just how I see things shaking out. Robinson often surprises us though, so buckle up.

Assumptions:

All in on Tannehill as QB (Per Robinson)

Double Down on King Henry as the focal point

Offensive weak point has been identified as primarily personnel (since no major coaching changes)

Defensive weak point has been identified as lack of takeaways (per Vrabel himself)

(Everything in these rough calculations is rounded to the nearest $500k for clarity/simplicity. Sometimes up, sometimes down. Checks out roughly in the end)

Beginning Top 53 Cap Est per Spotrac: -9M

Retirement: Brett Kern +$3.5M

Release:

Rabbit +$7M

Kendall Lamm +$3.5M

Rodger Saffold +$10.5M

Restructure: Net ~$35M in cap relief

Any combination of the following players that makes business and cap sense for the team:

Ryan Tannehill

Bud Dupree

Zach Cunningham

Derrick Henry

Julio Jones

Kevin Byard

Exercise RFA tender on David Quessenberry

(I've experimented with a few different combinations of ways to do this, and a few of the restructures would need additional auto-void years like most teams (including the Titans now) are regularly utilizing)

(There is an opportunity cost to this in the future. The dead money adds up, but if you play your cards right you can have it hit when your big contracts like Tannehill and Henry are coming off the books a few years down the line)

Re-Sign:

Harold Landry - 5 years, 85M, 3 year out, year 1 cap hit of ~$8M

Morgan Cox - 1 year, $1.5M

Ola Adeyini - 1 year, vet min.

Matthias Farley - 1 year, vet min.

Dylan Cole - 1 year, vet min.

Corey Levin - 1 year, vet min.

Kyle Peko - 1 year, vet min.

Dontrell Hilliard - 1 year, vet min.

Decline *ALL* other RFA tenders

Sign:

JC Jackson - 4 years, 72M, 2 year out, year 1 cap hit of ~$8M

Ryan Jensen - 3 years, 30M, no outs, year 1 cap hit of ~$7M

Dalton Schultz - 4 years, 40M, year 1 cap hit of ~$5M

Duron Harmon - 1 year, ~2M (Cruikshank replacement as Big Dime)

James White - 2 years, 6M (Get Downing his receiving back already, hedge for D. Evans)

Oren Burks - 1 year, vet min. (Replace ole Dzubnar with this Vandy ST ace)

Walk:

Ben Jones (tough SOB. Takes a beating like no other. It's been a great run. Maybe some bone on bone going on there and time to move on)

Geoff Swaim

Anthony Firkser

Rashaan Evans

Jayon Brown

Dane Cruikshank

D'Onta Foreman

MyCole Pruitt (may retire)

Nick Dzubnar

Marcus Johnson (can't stay healthy)

Jeremy McNichols (goodbye for real this time)

Khari Blasingame (There are better fullbacks out there)

Randy Bullock (thanks for the memories)

Chester Rogers (nice little 7 year career while it lasted)

Buster Skrine (was a baller for over a decade)

Ryan Izzo (wtf were you here?)

This leaves enough left for some wiggle room and to sign the draft class. About 10-12M. If you need more, throw in another restructure.

Draft:

1. T Darian Kinnard

3. WR

4. Punt God

4. G

5. S

6. CB

6. OL

But tgo, this isn't Madden. Cap space doesn't just grow on trees. Yeah yeah yeah. This is doable and Robinson has proven to be strategically aggressive at times and has been willing to utilize void years and restructures while this SB window is open. We have a lot of contracts coming off the books in 2023 to make up the difference - Julio, Saffold, etc.

We have to push the envelope and make another run. Overall, this is somewhere between the Rams/Bucs/Falcons/etc. level of reckless aggression, and the more run-of-the-mill conservative approaches we regularly see in the NFL. I think Robinson will successfully overhaul this offense, one way or another. This seems about equal in measure to the approach to last year's revamping of the defense.

lol going to need to do a welfare check on you @tgowhen JC Jackson either gets tagged by the Patriots or signs elsewhere in FA.

I do like the Dalton Schultz signing.

It isn't impossible I just don't see JRob pushing the massive amount of money into forward years that some here expect.

Yeah, that’s gonna be a gut punch

I'll be curious to see if they actually trade Lewan. Also hate to see Jones go. He has been a quiet force for the Titans.

Yeah, he could be back. Vrabel sounded kind of nostalgic talking about him and Robinson didn’t mention him at all when talking about OL play, so I’m reading into it a bit with his contract being up and his age.

I don’t believe we should sign JC Jackson to a big contract if they move enough pieces around to have the funds available. Would much rather them keep Lewan at his current salary and cut Saffold.

why?

Lewan at $13 million cap hit as one of the best LT in football is extremely more valuable than an OG who couldn’t last a full game just about all year and play has also dropped and not worthy of 10.5 million. You could say Lewans play dropped and he had injuries here and there as well, and even though his play took a slight decrease he is still worth every penny of his 13 mil

I agree Lewan won’t be here and I think we could get a 2nd and 3rd for him. I love the Jensen signing, and if we can’t retain Jones then I would target him. Why Landry? I think we would be better off getting Michael Gallup on a one year deal.

Would your plan have Radunz the starting LT and Kinnard the RT?

Yeah, it would be shifting money more to the interior and moving on from Lewan a year early.

They probably end up keeping him, but I think Radunz will be ready and I think his best position is LT.

I went with Landry because of the Tannehill connection / slot proficiency / physical nature / Shanahan scheme exp, and I actually think he could be cheaper than Gallup. But Gallup is definitely one of the guys we should he watching that fits the mold. With a guy like Jarvis Landry at his age and skillset, most of his contract would be funny-money that can be gotten out of.

Lewan was mentioned in the JRob interview today.

Yeah, I saw that too. And thought about that extensively.

If one were betting, they’d probably put the safe money on Lewan being back. That may actually be most likely, it is hard to say.

But I’m kind of trying to think outside the box here as I think Robinson may as well, and to me JC Jackson affects the game more than Lewan with our style of play and Lewan’s lack of reliability.

Adoree getting cut last year was a surprise for me. So I tried to throw something in that would be surprising to most of us if it actually happened.
